Update to Version 20

robert-engle wrote on 8/22/2022, 3:22 PM

Please help I have some very basic questions but I can't find any one can answer them. I have Sony Vegas 17 now it was going to upgrade to 20.

Questions,
1. First, if I upgrade to 20. Will I lose features I have in 17 like sky replacement??  Do I lose any features??

2. Second, does it overwrite on 17 or does it just reload a complete new version??
It looks like when I upgraded to 17 from before it left my old version on there also?

3. Lastly, does it transfer my older projects or does not transfer my old projects??  If not, how to lie, bring my old projects into 20??

1. There are a couple features that are so old that they were deprecated in 17 that have been removed in 20... mini DV/HDV tape capture, for instance, but all of the effects that are in 17 are still in 20 (though there never was a sky replacement effect, is that a third party plugin?).

2. If you have third party plugins, you might have to update them to work with 20.

3. There's a free demo of VEGAS 20 you can download to test if all works well on your system.

Okay great, thanks.  So last thing will it overwrite 17 or just completely load a new program and if so how do I import my old videos?

No it will not overwrite, but installs as a standalone that can handle the vegs from VPro 17. Both programs can be used (even at the same time)

The main thing you need to be aware of is that projects saved in 20 will no longer open in 17, so until you know it works out for you, make sure to make "my project v20.veg" backups of your projects rather than saving over the original projects you made in VEGAS 17.

With Vegas when you update to 20 you still have access to use 17 as well. But be aware that you cannot open projects in 17 that were re-saved in later software n.b. 20 even if they started out life in 17. Therefore backup your 17 projects under different names to your 20 projects so that you have the means of opening your older versions that were not then saved to 20 only - if you see what I mean.

Vegas is better in that regard than e.g. Resolve, which if you update from its 17 to its (current) 18 you cannot use both 17 and 18 - you can only use 18 and there is a somewhat messy database update and backup procedure required in Resolve which is not needed in Vegas.

@robert-engle  just a friendly FYI: "Please note that versions 14 and later come from VEGAS Creative Software [not "Sony"]. The VEGAS Team advises that they want to avoid the appearance of misusing a brand that isn't theirs." More here.

OK I upgraded thanks to all.

I just upgraded to Vegas Pro 20 last night. I know just like Version 17 it comes with Reduce Noise V.5 or I had that as a plugin don't remember. I see there are a ton of noise reduction plugins to buy. I only edit a video a month maybe three, so I don't need a $500 program!! Do you think the Noise v.5 is just basic and there is a better program? I don't mind spending $100 or so plus or minus if it really makes a difference. I was told all professionals, "I am not", run a noise reduction on their entire video as a standard rule?

Any suggestions on this topic and a plugin that will work with Version 20 would be great.

PS This is for Video Noise Reduction!!

Thank You,

Bob, Rochester NY
