Upgrade V 11 Platinum to Movie Studio 13 Suite

Larry Clifford wrote on 5/23/2015, 3:53 PM
I just received an email for 30% off Vegan Movie Suite.

I currently have Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum V 11 which I purchased from Amazon. I never physically installed it because I currently don't edit videos. I currently use Sound Forge Pro V 11.

1. Does this qualify as a valid upgrade serial number?

2. This is a download only. Will I be missing anything by using a download vs. package?

I am almost considering waiting for V 14. Of course I don't know when that will be available. I am hoping soon.

My environment is Windows 7 Pro with SP-1 and updates from Microsoft. (edit: 64-bit)

Any comments would be appreciated.

Hi,

I upgraded from v11 to v13, so I believe you can do the same.
I think there is no difference between the package and the download versions.
Several ppl do not like the big icons of v13.
For me it is not a problem, because I have 2 monitors.
The big advantage of v13 is that it is a 64-bit version, so you can use more RAM.
Anyway, if you are not in hurry, maybe waiting for v14 is not a bad idea... v13 was launched long time ago...

Cheers

Roberto

Thank you Roberto for your feedback.

I don't like the idea of icons. I don't think it would be easy to use for this type of program.

I have a single Dell U2412M monitor.

I think I will wait. Sony is probably trying to make that last little bit of money before a new release. If my records are correct it was announced January 15, 2014. That is about 1-1/2 years ago.

I'll bet that the new release will have even bigger icons.

I am in the same boat as you - I have Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum v11 and got the upgrade email showing deals for v13 Platinum and v13 Movie Suite (which contains v13 Platinum). The serial number checker for the latter said my v11 serial number did not qualify for the movie suite upgrade, which disappointed me.

@DW2,
that's the case, if a previous owner sold it to you after having used the one single upgrade option of the license.

I'm hoping Windows 10 will recognise that there is still a huge customer base that like Desktop Monitors ( and in my case a large TV). For this operation there is no point in "Touch-screen" input ( although a decent USB "Transport Keys" would be nice - Clearly there is "no-Market" I'm not liking those expensive keyboards with coloured stickers - Ugh! ).

The problem with ICONS is that they are ideal for folks that can't read - but who use the Software regularly - and can differentiate between several that look similar. I believe that is nonsense; since Text is an Icon ( of sorts) that has the advantage it is capable of precise interpretation.
In "motoring" some vehicles are identified as "Ambulance" and not some box with a sleeping head ( or whatever). There are times when the Word is better - Lookiing for TAXI, sir? An icon of a "car with coins going in" would not be instantly universal.

Indeed screen layouts often waste space which could be used for Text-buttons - and you could set the point-size as you get familiar with the Button. Presumably ending up with IM ( Import Media ) - but please, with a drop-down of locations since my Stuff is in different places, e.g. Music and SFX are separated and Movie clips are definitely elsewhere.
+I don't think I've ever used "Trimmer" - so there is a huge space that can be docked/expanded to take all manner of buttons -and- Options to replace each with Text or one of several Icons would be very nice...

Older users will recall when FUNCTION Keys were the new idea - and you got a card-template with PC Magazines, you could swap between programs . . . seems we never learn, eh?

There's a lot that could be improved with ANY interface....but "Change mine" at your peril - therein lies the issue - keep the Legacy Arrangement and you won't upset 85% of existing / long-term Users . . . .

If it ain't broke - don't fix it.

UKharrie...long rant but all good points.

Personally I wouldn't be lured by the upgrade offer to MS13. It has some flaws which makes it in many ways much less useful than MS11 or MS12. I rolled back to MS12 which works flawlessly for me. MS13 on the other hand has some hideous interface changes which many have spoken of here, also changes/bugs in the editing workflow which are pretty horrible, and I also experience frequent crashes when rendering too.

It's been quite a long time since the last update to MS13 and I've heard no word of an MS14? If MS14 (if there is such a thing) retains the changes that were introduced with MS13 then it could well be the end of my interest in the product.

I guess time will tell...
