Using clips from a dvd in Vegas 10

Bambino wrote on 9/12/2012, 3:47 PM
I have had an old VHS videotape transferred to a disc and now I want to use bits from the disc to include in a slideshow in Vegas. I have copied the disc to my computer and it will play successfully but when I open the folder there are a series of files - VIS_01_0, Video_TS(two of these) VIS_01_1, VIS_01_2, VIS_01_3, VIS_01_14.. I can only drag three of these onto the video track, and they appear there as a single image, not as the whole video which I want to edit. Can anyone help (in reasonably simple terms)?

Unfortunately, importing the .IFO file as described in vk's thread only works with Vegas Pro. The byte copy also doesn't work, I've tried it. Other suggestions in the thread may work but I think you'll have to pay for those (someone will correct me if I'm wrong). Using Vegas's DVD import function doesn't work very well either. If the .VOB boundary is not on a Title boundary there will be a noticable jump at that boundary after import.

Jack,
you're right about VMS 10, though it should work in VMS 11.

Thanks to all for the input. I tried the DVD import function that Jack S mentioned and have had some limited success with this. I have been able to import the video and drag to isolate the clip I want but the whole of the rest of the track remains (although it appears as blanked out. Is there any way I can delete this unwanted footage so that only the bit I want remains?

Bambino,
just tried myself the Import from DVD Camcorder Disc function in VMSP 10 with a self-made DVD. Can't you just edit it on the timeline just like any other project, i.e. get the footage you want, split and cut the unwanted parts?
Bambino wrote on 9/14/2012, 5:32 AM
No, this wouldn't work. I can now use the import media to get import the DVD but am able to do so only in sections - the 1hr 50 minutes dvd seems to have been imported in these sections, each named with a consecutive number.

Yes, each .VOB file gets imported as a separate .MPG file. This is the way the function works, sadly.

What i normally do is copy the .VOB files to my hard drive manually, then use a binary copy to combine them into a single .MPG file:

copy /b VIS_01_0.VOB + VIS_01_1.VOB + VIS_01_2.VOB final_single_file.mpg

Of course, include as many .VOB files as you have or want. You'll get a single seamless .mpg file to work with in the end.

Are you sure this method works? When I tried it, I still got the jump where the VOB boundaries were.

Jack, are you asking me? Admittedly i can't answer conclusively, but i've done it dozens of times and it's always been gapless for me.

That's my experience also. for that reason I always use DVDShrink with preferences set to output a single VOB. That works consistently with no discontinuity.

Chienworks, I think that if the individual titles don't exceed the VOB limit each VOB is a title. In this case, there'll be no jump (that's my experience anyway).

Most of the time when i do this it's a single title that spans multiple .VOB files. In fact, i'd probably guess this is the only situation i encounter.

If i had separate titles i wouldn't be bothering to try joining them together to avoid gaps!
