Vegas 11 Movie Studio HD Platinum will not run

Baalkutu wrote on 12/24/2012, 4:50 AM
Hi, just wondering if anyone has some advice as to what's going on here and if there's a fix?
I bought and installed a legit copy of Vegas 11 Movie Studio HD Platinum and have been using it without any issues for the last year or so.
Two days ago I went to open the program and nothing happened. Quite literally double click on the short cut. Hour glass symbol pops up for about a second an then no response at all.
I've read through the numerous posts about this happening to other Vegas users both in these forums and on the net in general. It seems to be a not uncommon problem.
Here's what I've tried so far:

I've tried uninstalling and re installing, with a registry clean to no avail.
I've even done the re install after I've manually removed all traces of Vegas from the registry, and from the file system. Still no good.
I have the latest drivers for my video card.
The latest version of Quicktime.
The newest build of Vegas MSHD (322).
I haven't installed any new software for weeks before Vegas started this behavior.
I haven't added or removed any hardware.
I've checked both my internal drives - no errors.
Tried opening the program from the desk top icon, the exe file and the start menu - none of which work.
Tried opening as admin and as normal user - no go.
Tried opening in safe mode - nothing.
Even tried opening in XP compatibility mode.
Neither my video card nor my cpu are overclocked

I'm at a loss as to what to try next. I think I've exhausted every combination I can think of. At least it feels like that after multiple install/uninstall/regedit cycles.
I REALLY don't want to have to re install windows again.

Every post I've seen about this issue is either unresolved or not relevant (eg people asking how to get their cracked copies working).
I guess it's lucky I'm only a hobbyist and not reliant on Vegas for work. Even so this is very disappointing. It's no wonder people use pirated software.
Why would you pay for a product that is so unreliable it randomly stops working?

Anyhow, if someone knows why this is happening or how to fix it I'd really appreciate some help.

System info:
Windows Version:7 64-bit
RAM:16gb
Processor:Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Video Card:GeForce GTX 660 Ti driver version - 310.70
Sound Card:Realtek 6.0.1.6559
DVD Burner:LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH20NS10

Baal
you have the latest, new version of Quicktime and the latest, very new nVidia driver.
DId it work with one of the previous versions?

Hi. No, Vegas started not opening with older nVidia drivers and older Quicktime. I downloaded and installed the newer versions to see if they would make a difference.

Any recent system restore points you could try?
Anything you could pick up from here?

Now, you see the value of an image backup. It has saved my but serveral times. Installing new programs or browsing the web can be an opportunity to pick up garbage. The image backup reduces the effect of that probability. How can you have a computer and not have an image backup? It's like going into a jungle without any weapon to protect you. Try "Easeus," it a free download and very good.

Hmmm, good point about making an image.
I haven't installed (or uninstalled) any programs prior to Vegas bugging out. No hardware changes either. In fact my system has been exactly the same for the last few weeks. Weird that it just stopped working out of the blue.
I'm pretty well firewalled too so I wouldn't have thought general web browsing could be so destructive. I guess I shouldn't really expect a product from a billion dollar multinational company like Sony to actually be robust enough to endure normal computer use ; )
Ah well live and learn hey. I'll have to ghost my system if I ever get Vegas work again.

Hi vkmast.
Maybe it is something to do with the 660 nVidia card. Weird that Vegas was chugging along fine with the old drivers before it died though.
No usable restore points : (
Silly boy hey? I should have been smarter about that - and imaging my system too, but as usual I didn't think about it until something happened.

Still hopeful if you can think of anything else?

I'm using a 650Ti (not 660Ti) with Win 8 64 bit with no issues...

Baal,
would you be able to get hold of an older graphics card to test?
I think Markk655 has MSP 12, so a trial with that version?
Maybe an automatic Windows update did something? Just thinking aloud.

Yes, MSP12 Plat in Win 8-64 bit.

Try disabling the Video card in Device Manager...I think your cpu (Ivy Bridge) has Intel HD4000 graphics. Do you have another video out (not on your graphics card)? If so, disable the NVidia GPU in Device Manager (right click it). Then see if VMS boots up.

Also, check what processes may be interfering with VMS. Look at TaskManager and see what processes are running. Are you running a virus checker/firewall program?

Tried turning off your antivirus so it doesn't run at startup?

I'm experiencing the same issue. I'm a hobbyist and occasional VMS user. Today when I launched the application, a window popped up advising of an error... and a space to add additional information to send to Sony for troubleshooting. I uninstalled VMS, then reinstalled the latest version. When I launched the application the same troubleshooting window appeared. Using VMS HD Platinum 11.

Update - After reviewing several other posts I decided to re-download the latest version of Apple's QuickTime. Go to Apple.com and search "QuickTime" to get the most recent version without downloading iTunes. I saved the file to my desktop, shut down my antivirus, and installed it. Now Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 works. I hope this helps others.
