Vegas Movie Studio 15 (and 16 Trial) no longer launch (Advice?)

SoupaPC wrote on 9/12/2019, 7:45 AM

I've had zero issues launching Vegas Movie Studio 15 Platinum since buying it a year or so ago. However, as of today (September 12th, 2019), it simply doesn't launch when I attempt to open the software. It pops up the usual loading screen/bar, gets to the end "Creating Windows..." and then that entire window closes and that's it.

I tried reinstalling VMS15P and it still had the same error, so then I tried installing the VMS16P (as a 30-day trial) and the same error persists. Basically, I can't edit any videos right now. It's a pretty awful feeling considering I have some internal deadlines I need to meet.

Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My system info:
Threadripper 2950X
4x8 GB DDR4 3000/C16
GTX 1080 Ti
Windows 10 Pro, Version 1903, OS build 18362.356

Vegas Movie Studio is installed on my boot SSD, and the system is otherwise functioning normally.

Windows update?
Try to restore to a date before september 12th and when it is going well than stop the Windows update for 35 days.

I am also back on build 18362.295 due to sudden problems

Thanks for the link. I have tried #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #8, #9, #10, #12, #13, #14, #18, #19, and #20. I believe most of the other options don't apply to my situation/I don't have the hardware relevant to those options. I have tried trials of Vegas Pro 17 and Vegas Movie Studio 16 Platinum (as mentioned above) and all three give me the same symptoms: the loading completes and closes at the very last step "Creating Windows..." with no error message or indication that the program has closed/failed.

HOWEVER I resolved the issue AS I WAS TYPING THIS POST! I was scrolling through open software running in the background and noticed that Riva Tuner Statistic Server and MSI Afterburner were running in the background... just like I've had them running for the last few years. It suddenly clicked that perhaps it was an issue with some background app, such as those, so I closed both apps and voila! App launched like normal. I have no idea why there is an issue between those as I haven't updated either app in months.

Thanks for reporting back as it could be helpful to others in a similar situation. Please confirm that you didn't need to use a system restore as suggested by j-v.

I tried to do a system restore, but Windows Updater claimed that I was ineligible because I hadn't updated in over 10 days (which is incorrect). I therefore did not initiate any sort of system restore, but I did try all of the above numbers (as listed in my previous comment) to no avail. To be clear, I did the above steps one by one with a system restart between each attempt, resetting each change each time after it failed to boot. The only thing that eventually worked was disabling MSI Afterburner, RTSS, and HWiNFO64. If I restart those applications after Vegas Movie Studio 15 Platinum is already running, everything is fine. It simply seems like something there was keeping the software from booting. RTSS hooks into games/APIs, so it's possible the hooking process was fuddling with proper software launch.

EDIT: For more clarity - I tested further and 100% the software loads fine with HWiNFO64 running in the background - it is MSI Afterburner specifically that is causing interference.

MSI Afterburner could be interfering with VMSP's detection of the graphics card. If you like reading log files, you could look at C:\Users\<userid>\AppData\Local\Movie Studio Platinum\15.0\gpu_video_x64.log (change the drive if your \Users folder is on another drive) and compare the contents after starting with MSI Afterburner running and with it not running.
