Vegas movie studio or Vegas pro?

Hello.

I am new in the forum and my problem is about the version of Vegas products. There is a sale now on Steam platform and Vegas Movie Studio 17 Platinum costs only 116 PLN (31.50 dollars) and I have a medium experience with Vegas pro 17 and 18 when it comes to basic editing videos such as creating memes from games (I know, it is not so professional edition but at least for me it is the first step to accustom with the program). I am wondering.... if the Vegas MS 17 platinum differs a lot from Vegas pro. I searched on Google that it is a limit of timeline tracks but I do not use them very much (maybe 4-5 max) and I usually use in-built transitions such as Chroma Keyer or Color corrector. In my future plans, I am thinking about using VHS effects or retro ones. I only require GPU acceleration because of my laptop specs (i5-8300h and GTX 1650 with 16 GB of ram). Could someone help me in choosing the type of vegas program or if someone used/uses both, will you tell me the biggest differences between them?

Edit: I found also a threat that products bought on Steam do not include the serial number and there is no support neither Steam nor Magix. I cannot confirm that but maybe the case is different?

For any answers, I will be grateful

Mac

VMS17 Platinum is basically a cut down consumer version of Vegas Pro. To my knowledge it has unlimited video and audio tracks nowadays although I cannot find mention in the Product Comparison page https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-movie-studio/product-comparison/#productMenu

Magix provide a 30 day trial you could play with to see if it suits you. There are some minor differences with the Steam version.

I suggest that you just go with the MS Platinum version, especially as you say that "for me it is the first step to accustom with the program".

You may want to know some of the following points though.

"You need Steam to run it".

The Steam version can only be updated via Steam.

"Steam customers do not have a serial number for the MAGIX account. So, they need to check if an upgrade is available in the Steam Store or contact MAGIX Customer Service (infoservice@magix.net) to receive a personally upgrade offer." (Magix Sales Dept.)

"The sales model through Steam does not allow for us to effectively deliver "upgrade" offers to existing users since we do not receive specific sales information on individual users on that platform. Really, it is up to Steam to start providing a mechanism which could provide a viable upgrade model. With that said, to compensate for the lack of upgrades, from time to time VEGAS is sold on sale on Steam at a significant discount which should be (extremely) competitive with standard upgrade prices." (Magix Vegas developer)

"You are limited to run one application only (due to Steam's environment limitation that it will turn you to the 'already running' app rather than run another one!). In 'normal' version, you can run multiple instances of Vegas, opening different project, and copy-paste the clips between these instances."

My understanding is that there is support from Steam and VEGAS.

It means that I can only run one project at the same time?

Yes, only one.

Ok. What about already created projects in Vegas pro 18? Will them work with Movie platinum 17 or not?

According to reports on Steam Community there may be a workaround. You need to search there, I don't have the link any more.

Ok, I will try to find more details. I saw that there's a possibility to refund if I won't be satisfied. I have time until 5th day of January. Thank you for any information :)

Vegas Pro .veg project files do not open in VM Studio versions.

If you're a consumer (not a professional editor), Movie Studio is enough of a learning curve for most. Vegas has features professionals need, including the ability to use third party professional plugins. But Studio and Vegas are very similar, and the Platinum Movie Studio has enough features for anyone editing for YouTube or similar. I've used Movie Studio for professional productions released to film festivals. Start with Movie Studio, it's a lower price initial investment. Another note, if you can edit well with Movie Studio or Vegas, you'll find it easier to transition later to any professional editing software, including Apple Final Cut if you need to. Adobe Premiere too, but Premiere is more locked down in arrangements.

I tried with Adobe Premiere Pro but I cannot get used to the layout but I try to get accustomed with the Adobe interface by working with After Effects. I would move to Premiere Pro only if I have money not only to pay for the Adobe subscription but also for plugins.
