Vegas Post Purchase or Subscription

kmaultsby wrote on 9/8/2021, 11:48 PM

Just asking for opinions. I own a license version of Vegas Post 18 and I also own a license version of Boris Continuum 2020. Most of my editing is vacations Family events Air, and Car shows. I have done a lot of family stuff that uses FX so I working on learning Vegas Effects. I have a couple of questions. I know the final dissension is up to me but I would like to hear from others. Is it worth getting the subscription or just a purchase? The price is lower than the Adobe plan, but the reason I left Adobe products is that it was over five hundred dollars a year. Just to be clear the upgrade will be going from Vegas Post 18 to 19.

I've got the perpetual license of VP19 Post (coming from VP18 Post Suite) because I enjoy owning the program, but I think next year I will buy into the subscription.

The extras like Vegas Hub, and royalty free stock images/video is a great addition and can be very useful. I've seen the AI text-to-speech in action and I was blown away with how natural all the languages and voices sound.

If I heard this correctly they won't be releasing new applications in the future, just paid substantial updates. For me it's too late, but for others I would go with the subscription.

I have the normal Vegas Pro with the Hub and Hub explorer, all normal on Vegas Pro

As do I, but clicking Hub Explorer will generate zero content. Whereas if you were a 365 Subscriber you would see all the royalty free stock images/videos.

True for now, but we hope to provide functionality in that window for all users in future updates.

I have one more question. If I purchase a license for 19 this year and the following year after I decide to get the Subscription, what happens to my original? Do have two copies 19.0 I will own, and 19.2 is a subscription?

gary-rebholz wrote on 9/10/2021, 10:10 AM

@kmaultsby, If you buy the perpetual license, you own it forever. Technically, the subscription doesn't have a version number. You're not subscribing to "VEGAS Pro 19", you're subscribing to "VEGAS Pro 365", which at the moment is based upon the latest version of VP19. When new builds come out, you get them for as long as you continue to subscribe.

You will receive updates to VP19 with your perpetual license for a least a year from the original release. Beyond that, your VP19 perpetual will "freeze" with the last update, while VEGAS Pro 365 will continue to evovle with each new build release. Make sense?

vkmast wrote on 9/10/2021, 10:40 AM

@gary-rebholz just to clarify for the OP, from this comment I assume that "freeze" does not mean that he won't be able to use his VP 19 perpetual (in another device if 365 still allows only one activation at a time).

gary-rebholz wrote on 9/10/2021, 10:54 AM

By "freeze" (bad choice of words...sorry) I mean that he will no longer get free updates. His VP19 will be the same from that point onward. But it will certainly continue to work forever (or until the operating system or some other non-VEGAS variable makes it obsolete).

[Not planning to cancel my subscription, but] I think it's still a bit unclear what happens if a subscription is not renewed? Everything (Vegas Pro, plugins, Sound Forge…) shuts down right away?

gary-rebholz wrote on 9/10/2021, 12:53 PM

@janndk, Everything that is ours (VEGAS Creative Software and MAGIX) will stop functioning. Plug-ins are registered through the plug-in manufacturer, so I'm not totally sure how they handle it, and each may be different. "Right away" is somewhat loose. From time to time our software attempts to confirm that the serial number is a valid subscription. At that time, if it finds that it is no longer active, the software will cease working. So there could be a bit a a delay between the time you end your subscription and the time your software stops working.

If you have further questions about all this, feel free to visit www.vegascreativesoftware.com/support between the hours of 12:00 and 4:00 Central (currently GMT-5) Monday through Friday and use the chat widget in the lower-right-hand corner to chat directly to a support rep. They know more about the details than I do.

Mostly just want to fully understand how the subscription model is working. Magix had earlier an "update service" (still has in some cases?) which just stopped updates/upgrades if not renewed.

But - as the renewal process is automated, I'm also a bit worried about situations where that automation may not work, and suddenly some things (e.g. earlier bundled software) are gone, if you need to sign for a new subscription.

Hi, I subscribed to Vegas 365 when Vegas 19 was released. I downloaded whatever I was to download (I say that bkz I am not sure whether 365 has a download, but the Start button menu shows Vegas 19) and have been using my Start button menu item to launch Vegas. When Vegas launches it says Vegas 19. Now Vegas has brought out version 20: I do not know what I need to do to make sure I have the latest version of Vegas on my machine and also, how do I launch it? Can you please enlighten me.

Bought Movie Studio 2022 with the free upgrade to 2023 when it became available in August. When Can I expect my email for the upgrade?

vkmast wrote on 8/18/2022, 2:07 AM

@Steve-Purcell As new Movie Studio versions after #17 are MAGIX products, you need to try and ask at https://www.magix.info/us/video-forum/movie-studio/

(Anyway, you most likely need to email shop@magix.net)
