Vegas Post (Vegas Effects Specifics) compared to HitFilm Pro

Jaslan wrote on 1/31/2022, 1:34 PM

Hi,

I am downloading the Vegas Post Trial right now. But the sale ends tomorrow, and I am not sure I will have time to learn enough about how to use Vegas Effects and/or Vegas Image to get a good feel for what it can do.

I have Hitfilm Pro but I am still on version 14 which is from about 2018. I was having a lot of fun with the 3D environment using things like the Particle Generator and got a little bit into some 3D objects and moving the cameras and light sources around in the 3D environment. I also was learning how do use the chroma key effects and masks with the green screen in a very basic capacity. Of course, HitFilm Pro doesn't really integrate into Vegas Pro anymore, so I think I will just get Vegas Post so everything integrates nicely.

Is there anything major that I would miss if I drop HitFilm Pro and just use Vegas Post? I would still consider myself a beginner but would like to keep learning more advanced techniques so I am trying to decide if I should fully convert to Vegas or will I be limiting the capabilities (either now or in the future if I get to more advanced topics).

I would really appreciate any help you could offer. As I said, I am going to check out the trial for Vegas Post but I am skeptical I will get familiarized enough to learn the differences in capabilities in time for the sale.

JL

Don't know exactly the differences between HitFilm Pro and VEGAS Effects but these videos should be helpful:

1. From 2019:

2. From 2021 (updated version of VEGAS Effects):

@Jaslan 'HitFilm Pro doesn't really integrate into Vegas Pro anymore' ?

what did it used to do that it doesn't do now?

With Vegas Pro 15, I was able to open the HitFilm project directly from Vegas but now with Vegas Pro 19 it doesn't. I did some searching and found that some things changed in VP 16 or 17 and it seems there is no intention to fix it. Of Course, my VP15 still works fine and my Hitfilm Pro 2018 still works fine but I want to update and it seems like just upgrading to Vegas Post will be an easier solution.

I have been using Vegas Effects for a couple of hours now and surprised at how much it looks and feels like HitFilm Pro.

Working👍

Ok. So they do integrate now. But, I assume I would have to update HitFilm Pro to get it to work. I do appreciate your pointing that out. I read some old forum posts a few weeks ago and got the impression it was a thing of the past.

Ironically, after watching these, I understand why Vegas Effects looks like HitFilm Pro.

Hmm.... upgrade to Vegas Post for $299 or update HitFilm Pro for $279. I appreciate the help from the responses.

@Jaslan Sorry, all i can show is mine are both up to date & integrate 🤷‍♂️

Former user wrote on 1/31/2022, 6:36 PM

@Jaslan I've read that the marriage of Hitfilm & Vegas will be coming to an end at some point, don't know if this is true or when ? 🤷‍♂️ So if V Effects does what you want that might be the better option,

For me i need to find out if V Effects imports & works with OBJ 3D files.

Yes, there is. Being a trimmed down version of HitFilm Pro, Vegas Post does not have either Mocha HitFilm or Foundry, the latter being 3D camera tracking. Both of these features should be in HitFilm Pro 14.

Also, HitFilm Pro can be installed and activated on 3 computers at the same time, though I'm not sure about Vegas Effects with a Vegas Post perpetual licence purchase as to whether or not it allows for 2 simultaneous activations as applies to Vegas Pro itself.

HitFilm Pro doesn't really integrate into Vegas Pro anymore

It should do and always has for me, even up to HitFilm Pro 16. FXHome quite recently announced that future updates to HitFilm Pro will cease to integrate with Vegas Pro, but the current release of HFP 16 most certainly does integrate with Vegas Pro 16, 17, 18 and 19. However, for the integration to work, you do need to make sure that the HitFilm.fio2007-config file is loaded in C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro xx.0. If that file is there in, say, VP18 but not in VP19, just copy it from VP18 and paste it into VP19.

The end of Vegas Pro integration announcement was contained in the What's New features for the Version 2021.3 update released on or about 16 December 2021 - https://fxhome.com/product/hitfilm-pro/updates - which carried the following information:

Features no longer available from the next update

Integration between HitFilm and VEGAS Pro.

AAF import/export support.

After Effects plugin support.

I found another difference. I will add it in case someone reads this thread in the future with the same question.

HitFilm Pro also includes the Boris FX Continuum Complete which has some 3D tools such as 3D extrusion and the Titling studio.

Former user wrote on 2/1/2022, 7:36 PM

@Jaslan You won't get Continuum Complete, that's £700 of software for a full OFX license, i searched FXHome website, only one reference to Continuum & that is 3D Objects.

There's over 300 fx's/filters in Boris Continuum Complete

Title Studio is limited to what 3D files can be imported, i had a chat about that on Boris's forum last yr

Not quite ... HFP comes with only the Boris FX Continuum 3D Objects Unit, not all 20 Units that make up Boris FX Continuum Complete (which costs $695 USD for a new purchase of the OFX version - unless a subscription is chosen).

Boris FX Continuum Units are excellent, but many posts on the forum over the years show that Units from different releases of BCC usually cannot co-exist on the same computer at the same time. So if two or more Continuum Units are installed, all of those Units will need to be from the same release.

Also, it would be interesting to know from which Continuum release is the 3D Objects Unit in HFP. Boris FX Units that have over the years come as a bonus with a purchase of Vegas Pro have sometimes been one or two releases earlier than the then current release available directly from Boris FX.

Ok. I should correct myself and say there are SOME elements (6) of BCC included in HFP that are not in Vegas Effects. My HFP 14 has Extruded EPS, Extruded Spline, Extruded Text, Layer Deformer, Title Studio, and Type on Text. I didn't realize there was more to BCC than those. Anyway, I don't see them in Vegas Effects.

But I found another thing I am confused by. When I installed the Vegas Post Trial, I got NewBlue Live2Post, which I believe is part of Vegas Stream. With Live2Post came NewBlue Titler Pro 7, which is installed on my system, and shows up in Vegas Pro and Hitfilm BUT doesn't work in either. I suppose because I don't have a license for it (I do have licenses for a few other NewBlue "teaser" packs like filters 5 recolor/recreate). So the question is, does Titler Pro 7 come with Vegas Post (or Vegas Stream) but just doesn't get activated with the trial? Or is NewBlue just installing it in the hopes that the user will see it and want it?

Former user wrote on 2/1/2022, 8:04 PM

@Jaslan Quite often plugins don't show & if they do they don't work, whoever supplies the Trial of there product can control the trial given but plugins are a separate entity, harder to control i guess, I trialed a lot of different programs but most if not all didn't show my plugins, so that was bit useless as that is why i wanted to try them.

The Vegas Effects Import 3D Model Dialog has all the formats that HFP has (.obj is one of them) plus .gltf and .glb
