Vegas Pro 11 Rendering Problems

Ruse wrote on 12/9/2011, 12:04 AM
Hi this is my first time and I am new to Vegas Pro 11
I am working with AVCHD files imported from a Sony HD XR550 video camera
In the properties field I use the Match Media Settings Button.
This brings up the HD 1080-50i (1920x1080, 25.000 fps) template.
When I choose either the GOOD or BEST rendering option I get a very bad double image/ghosted image in the preview playback window
This double image also shows up on the rendered file.
The problem shows on all moving images and when the shots are panned.
I have tried both de-interlacing options with no improvement
It is only when I set the rendering quality to PREVIEW that the playback and rendering
is fine.
I am rendering to MAIN Concept MPEG-2 using the template DVD Architect PAL Widescreen video stream.
My question is - is there a reduced quality when I render using the PREVIEW QUALITY as against using the BEST and GOOD option (if and when they work) and can we get them to work?
My finished result doesn't appear to me to be as good as the results that I had in Movie Studio 9
I am also having a lot of problems with the NewBlue Titler it crashes regularly when I move things around the screen
Hope you can help

Ruse,

First, welcome to the forum!!

Next, I'm not sure how much help I can be, but I hate to see your post go unanswered.

I sounds like you're doing the exactly correct thing by using the "Match Media Settings" wizard. Your problem of "double image/ghosted image" would make me think that somehow this matching procedure went awry. Suggest you double check by using MediaInfo against your source footage and make sure they matches your Project Properties.

The "Good" or "Best" rendering options determine the resizing algorithm used by Vegas - most folks in this forum recommend always using "Best" (i.e. bicubic).

Since you are resizing, you'll want to set a Deinterlace method in your project properties. You can use either "Blend" or "Interpolate".

What I don't understand is how the Preview Quality would improve your rendered video. Maybe others can chime in.

As far as the NewBlue Titler is concerned, make sure you have the latest version of both Vegas 11 (build 425) and the NewBlue titler - NewBlue Titler Pro updated

Also, are you using a video card with GPU acceleration? If so, see: Answers to many GPU issues.

Hope this helps, if not, there are many knowledgeable folks on this forum who I'm sure can help fix your problems.

Ruse,
Just to make sure, what are your settings here (in Video quality)?

and do you have the *Preview' quality set here (full res. rendering quality) and really getting better results?

Hi Jerry,
Many thanks for replying to my cry for help.
A little more history on my problem.
When I first downloaded Vegas Pro 11, I encountered the rendering problem
The first thing I did was to reinstall the program and as that didn't help we thought that it might be my graphics card. I was using an ATI Radeon HD 4800 so I upgraded to a Geforce 560 Direct CU1gb graphics card and updated all my drivers.
The result was the same.
The next thing was to reinstall windows 7 - still the same problems.
After much experimentation I came up with a reasonable result, the details are as I described in my first post. The only correction to that post is that although I can influence the quality of the playback and create a double image with some of the pre-view settings it does not reflect on the final rendering quality.
From my reading if I render in the preview mode then the De-interlace options don't come into to operation.
I downloaded the Media information tool as you suggested. (thanks)
The numbers don't mean a lot to me.

If you play back interlaced video on a progressive computer monitor, you will see interlacing, unless you have invoked some kind of deinterlacing at the player level. There are no exceptions.

The Vegas preview either shows deinterlaced or not, depending on the preview quality, preview window size, and project properties. They all have an effect.

Ruse,

Your MediaInfo stats look good. The only other things to double check are:

1) Make sure you project setting look like the screen print posted above by vkmast, except Rendering Quality should be set to "Best"
2) Also, double check the "Deinterlace Method" is set - this is important for resizing you render.
3) musicvid makes a good point - what's your external player? Make sure it is set to deinterlace.

Hi,
Yes I can still only get a reasonable rendered MPG2 file for use in Architect by rendering in Preview mode - as your screen shots but with the de-interlace method set to none. I don't believe that choosing the the interlace or blend method in preview mode has any effect, it doesn't seem to. The comments in the Help Menu seem to indicate this.
The only other way that I have managed to get a good result is to render to AVCHD
add the files to Architect and let the render happen there because the Architect then compresses the files and the result is great.
This method of working isn't efficient when creating a menu based DVD the disk. as in this this method all the files must be compressed every time you make a disc - it takes forever

Thanks for your imput

Preview resolution or quality do not affect the output.
HD to DVD requires recompression to MPEG-2 SD. No way around it.
When you make a DVD from HD, you lose 85% of the video information. It's simple math.
If you are satisfied with recompressing in Architect, then go ahead. You have much more control over the result in Vegas, once you learn what the settings do.
Every DVD player gets the interlacing right, whether you are using analog or digital output.

Many thanks to all,
my rendering quality is a lot better now
