seems most are still waiting for the definitive Pro 11 update build No. 998/999.
edit:
SCS just announced VMStudio Platinum version 12, so...

i thingiink we've all been there, done that wondering when the next version / update is coming out. suffice to say no one knows, and those that do aren't going to be saying anything....

that said, if scs goes straight to 12 without fixing 11 then i'll be passing and, having tried cs6, will probably forgo the user friendliness of vegas in favour of the reliability and stodgyness of edius.

seems like a great pity that what was once the most reliable and robust nle to be had has deteriorated into a mishmash of multiple titlers, unfixed bugs, and a seemingly endless pursuit of marketing gimmicks, whilst we users are left wondering what's going on.

really hard to say when, as stated, its a guessing game. Possibly even not at all depending on whether SCS can actually be bothered to continue during all the negativity from v11. Although in their sticky, they do say it will happen but 64 bit only.

I'm with ushere, I get the feeling v12 could be just another face lift with no substance in fixing real stability issues since the implementation of GPU acceleration. It just hasn't touched the hearts of its users in many cases. I am one of those. Do we want it fast - yeah!, do we want to have stability issues at the expense of fast? - errr, no. Some would say 'just turn off GPU', true.. or stay with v10, so why upgrade?

I also tried CS6, its ok, it works, but in the end, i don't really like it. With quite a few bugs being reported on boards and twitter about it too. It also just feels too locked down (think fcpx). Its waveform and vector scopes look rubbish, and its difficult to get a preview screen up for grading with waveforms at the same time.
However, Edius is looking good so far. I like it. Much better stability and better monitoring than CS6. In particular, i find the built in grading controls excellent. And a biggy for me - it handles video levels correctly, unlike Vegas. (one of my pet gripes).
You see, other people are doing great work in the field of NLE software design. I always try to keep an eye on the bigger picture, there are alternatives - good ones.
I guess its down to the individual to decide whats best for the job.
As a side note, I did offer my time as a tester to help Vegas, but as yet they have declined. So in the end, it just feels hopeless to me anyway.

I must say that for the first time during my use of Vegas Pro, I'm not looking forward to the new version with excitement at all. Even though I've been one of those few lucky ones for whom the 11 has been quite stable, and performed really well with GPU acceleration - after having tried Edius 6.51 I conclude that the whole video engine in Vegas needs a general overhaul...

I realize I never completed any project in Edius - so I have no multicamera, syncing or final delivering experience - but the color correction/grading experience i did have with Edius has been amazing! It's ironic that as "modest" as this NLE appears (32-bit, no explicit CUDA/OGL acceleration), it's able to preview heavily graded clips in real-time. The efficiency of Edius code is shown in full fps playback and fast renders - while all CPU threads are used in up to 100%, and GPU - up to 60%... I can only imagine what it's capable of with one of those Grass Valley dedicated video cards!

I still love the flexibility of using Vegas, its intuitive UI, complete sound editing support, etc - but if somehow they could be combined with Edius playback and rendering engines' efficiency, we would really have the winner NLE...

Right: VMSP 12 is now released and ready for download.

Having some unexpected and severe troubles (crashes and "Stopped working" ) with my latest Vegas Pro 11 project I contemplated if I might be able to finish it in VMSP 12... so I downloaded and installed it.
The project does not contain any fancy stuff FX's or third party gimmicks - just the stuff, that I always do - and therefore it was a surprise as Vegas Pro started misbehaving so intensely. Only difference to earlier projects were a few 7.000 x 1.000 pix stills - but, really - that should be no problem today in Vegas Pro 11 as we have known and been discussing that issue since Vegas Pro 8 ...

Well, well: VMSP will not open a .veg file (of course). An EDL file is also inedible for it.... so I held my breath (never underestimate the creativity of humans) and did a Select all + Copy in Vegas Pro 11 and a Paste in VMSP 12 - and - yes! the whole project was transferred. Seemingly with FX's etc but without markers, however. Nice.

So far I have only been able to do a little editing (without errors or hiccups) and some renders (which in 1 out of 10 cases made the Pro Stop working) - but render times seem totally equal (have not yet tried to optimize Preview Ram and Threads - but the CPU usage and the GPU usage also looks quite the same (yes: VMSP 12 has GPU utilization too).

So far for now - I will continue editing my project.....

PS: VMSP has even got the Color corrector (secondary) which it AFAIR did not have in the good old days - but still not the Video velocity envelope - but no problem, however, as it can be done by a little stretching, then.... but of course not the more severe scripting etc stuff.

You have Vegas Pro 12?
ritsmer wrote on 8/6/2012, 10:21 AM
I have Vegas Pro 11 682/683 (sorry for the -now corrected- typo in the above post - and no: I'm not a 12 Beta tester either (I could never sign a NDA - not because I would gossip any news around, but because a real old fashioned gentleman will never accept somebody to suspect him not to behave as an old fashioned gentleman - and even sign that the other part is in his -kinda- rights to suspect such a thing ...)

... and now I have VMSP 12 (trial, so far) too.

Nice, btw. that SCS seems to have removed the "Pro" from the Movie Studio designations.

A Vegas Pro 12 release BEFORE a stable final release of SVP v11, would be a mistake of massive proportions. Sony could forever kiss off their once golden reputation of making high quality, reliable hardware and software. They would fall back to the reputation that Japanese companies held back in post WWII 1940's and 1950's; that everything from Japan was cheaply made and poor quality.

This would be a giant middle finger right in the face of all of use who were once very loyal Sony customers.

If SCS is already dropping 32-bit support starting from V12, I think this a bit too early. At least personally, I wouldn't like that at all. I have a 32-bit system that is working properly and I'd hate to have to go out buying a new PC because of 1 software program. I think there aren't many programs yet that only support 64-bit.

On the beta it says, for Vista and Windows 7. I'm running Windows 8 beta now and as soon as TechNet has Win 8 RTM I'll be running that. So surely SVP 12 will support Win 8. That will be a downer for sure if not.

" I think there aren't many programs yet that only support 64-bit."

Adobe Premiere Pro has been 64 bit since CS5 or 5.5 (now 6). However they bundled CS4 version with 5.5 for those not yet upgraded to 64 bit, which was a nice concession.

I also received the email. We haven't signed an NDA so are not bound by it. If we did, we could not say that we had.

Windows Vista never was a viable OS. As much as I wanted it fixed at the time, I am really glad now that Microsoft gave up and went on to Windows 7 (which has been wonderful).
