.vf File Association Problems Movie Studio 12 (64)

DazGsy wrote on 2/16/2013, 9:16 PM
Hi all,

This is my first forum post, and I'd be very grateful if somebody can help me with this problem that has me baffled.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and upgraded from Movie Studio 11 to Studio 12 yesterday. I decided to keep Studio 11 on my PC, so just installed the CD-ROM of Studio 12 64-bit and then updated to build 756 from Sony's website.

Studio 12 seems to work OK, but I can't double-click a .vf project file to open it. I get the pop up messages:

1. "Please wait while Windows configures Movie Studio Platinum 12.0 (64-bit)"
2. "Movie Studio Platinum 12 (64-bit) must be installed from DVD or the downloaded installer"

To open a project, I have to launch Movie Studio 12 and then 'Open File' and select my .vf project.

Now, whenever I open Movie Studio 12, I get the prompt:
"Do you want to associate the following file types with Movie Studio Platinum 12 software - .vf ?"
... to which I answer 'Yes', but this makes no difference - I still can't double click a .vf to open it.

So it seems that .vf files are now associated with Movie Studio 12, but double-clicking doesn't work.

Can anybody help? Does this have anything to do with having the old 32-bit Movie Studio 11 still installed?

Thanks,
Daz.

Right-click on a .vf file, select "open with", and choose your permanent file association from there. That's the simplest way.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me but the .vf file is already permanently associated with Movie Studio 12. The .vf files are already shown in explorer with the new Movie Studio 12 icon, but the association isn't complete because double clicking the .vf file brings up those two pop-up windows I mentioned:

1. "Please wait while Windows configures Movie Studio Platinum 12.0 (64-bit)"
2. "Movie Studio Platinum 12 (64-bit) must be installed from DVD or the downloaded installer"

I think something is missing in the registry to complete the file association.

Any other suggestions? Thanks,
Daz.

I would probably try reinstalling VMS 12. Tinkering with the registry would be a last resort.

You are not alone.I have the same problem.
Platinum 12(retail cd rom) on win 7 64 bit.(only version installed)I think its a bug.

Update to build 756 doesnt fix it.

I just open them from within movie studio.
I wonder if its a problem thats related to the cd rom install only?

Maybe you could try uninstalling/reinstalling the download version? You have the serial number.
See the fixed bugs list in Build 756 Release Notes.

Thanks RedFox, good to know I'm not the only one. If there are two of us you can bet there are many more. This problem isn't the end of the world but it's annoying and inefficient to have to open the .vf files from within Movie Studio.

Thanks to the guys who suggested re-installing. If I want to try the downloadable installer instead of my retail CD ROM, which file do I download and run? - the 'Build 756' file or the 'Trial Movie Studio 12' file?

I contacted Support 3 days ago and I've been given an incident number. I'll post the solution if they ever give me one.

I think the problem is registry-related. Using Windows 7 Event Viewer I can see an event saying the detection of product feature "installer_data" failed, and it says "The resource 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Sony Creative Software\Movie Studio Platinum\12.0\Update\' does not exist".

Thanks,
Daz.

The suggestion from vkmast has solved the problem for me.
Dont use the disk to install and then update.

Uninstall
Download the latest version( build 756)
Run as administrator and install.
Enter the key you got with the cd rom and register online.

I didnt realise you could do that..Thanks to vkmast for the info.

That worked for me too! Yep, the solution is to uninstall Movie Studio 12 and then re-install using the downloadable latest version from www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/updates (build 756).

Thanks everyone.

It works for me too...Thanks!
may be the install under the "administrator profil", is playing a role?

I think you guys should submit a tech support ticket with Sony. There's obviously a flaw in the CD install.
vkmast wrote on 7/18/2013, 6:55 AM
I would think that SCS is aware of the CD install flaw. The Release Notes of build 756 referred to above state that (it) fixed a bug that prevented the application from prompting to associate the .vf file type with Movie Studio.
There are probably a lot of packages out there including the initial build CD with the install flaw that they won't withdraw.

In my case, I got the issue AFTER updating my cd installation to the last release (build 896).
I cannot tell the issue was there BEFORE the update (in the installation CD)because as soon as I started VMS12, the prgram claimed for update, which I did.

I noted few months ago issues with DVDArchitect update:
When I did update then the program could not work anymore.
When I un-installed, re-installed and re-registered (as adviced here by vkmast) then everything went ok.

In my opinion the update process in this case was surely the issue.
