Have you gone into the Program Files/Sony/Movie Studio X directory to ensure that the program files are actually there (particularly the MovieStudioPlatinumX.exe file)?

Have you tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling it?

Finally -- obvious question -- have you ensured you have a 64-bit operating system? Which OS are you using?

Thanks for responding.

Yes - the program files are there: -
C:\Program Files\Sony\Movie Studio Platinum 12.0
C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Movie Studio Platinum 12.0

Yes - I've uninstalled, then reinstalled from disk, then updated from Sony

Yes - my system is 64-bit (Window's 8.1, Intel i7-4770K, 16GB RAM)

I can open VF files from within Movie Studio

But when I double-click on a VF file I get a message that Movie Studio Platinum 12.0 (64-bit) must be installed from DVD or the download installer. Fatal error during installation.

This has never happened before (been using Vegas since version 4). Now has occurred twice - in each case after downloading build 1184 update.

Grateful for advice on solving this issue

Have you checked and/or renewed your file association?

Right click on the VF file, then choose Open With and make sure the file association is pointed to the program file of the version of Movie Studio you want to be the default program to open that type file. Select to always open with that version and then see if Movie Studio opens correctly.

Since you have both the 32 and 64 bit programs installed, it seems as if Windows has gotten confused.

Hope this helps.

I have taken ‘open with’ right up to the EXE file for 64-bit Movie Studio, inside the program folder. When I did this, and select the EXE, I immediately got the same message - Movie Studio Platinum 12.0 (64-bit) must be installed from DVD or the download installer. Fatal error during installation.

Do you have another suggestion?

This is for Win7 64 but may apply to 8:

Have you tried downloading the exe file from Sony and using that as the installer instead of using the disc version and then updating?

I have the exact same problem with Movie Studio Platinum 12. Did you ever solve the problem?

Have you worked through the troubleshooting steps in this thread?
rcfs wrote on 1/26/2015, 1:31 PM
Yes, except for the complete uninstall. I re-installed the program and now my issue is that when I click on a second project file to access an element, another Movie Studio opens. I guess only one project can be opened in the program at a time. Thanks for responding!

Yes, all versions of Vegas/Acid/Architect have always been this way. One file per instance, but you can open multiple instances.

Oddly enough, with Sound Forge it's the opposite. you can open multiple files at once, but can only have one instance of Sound Forge running at a time.

This is an old thread but I'm having the same problem. When I click on a .vf file, I get a popup that says "Movie Studio Platinum 12.0 (64-bit) must be installed from DVD or the download installer". If I open MSP12 first, then I can load and run the same .vf file.

Has there ever been a fix for this problem?
