VMS17 Platinum Build 204 and Mp4 files

EricLNZ wrote on 12/12/2020, 10:20 PM

There have been a couple of threads about problems with Mp4 files. My problem is with Handbrake created files which is of concern as Handbrake is frequently recommended as a Vegas friendly file convertor.

I occasionally use Handbrake to convert my 50i mts camera files to 50p Mp4. The Handbrake files work perfectly in VMS16 Platinum and I'm pretty certain they were working well in VMS17 Platinum until now. Maybe Build 204 is causing another problem. Both VMS16 and 17 are using, or trying to use, "so4compoundplug.dll". The problem is that VMS17 is reluctant to import them and doesn't play them well. So badly they usually freeze the video while the audio continues.

Here is a link to a short file I've uploaded to Google Drive

I'd be grateful if others could try it with VMS17 Platinum Build 204 to see if you have any problems, or whether it's just me. Thanks.

Where's your link Eric? Can you show also used settings for Handbrake?

That's weird the link was originally there

Handbrake settings are a custom preset I've been using for a few years without problems until now.

Well I've found a work around. I get smoother preview if I force VMS17 to use "compoundplug.dll" for decoding instead of "so4compoundplug.dll". This is achieved by Options/Preferences/File I/O tab and ticking "Enable legacy AVC decoding".

But this seems a backward step as VM16 has no problems using "so4compoundplug.dll".

@EricLNZ

In addition to VMS 16 P b 175, file 220181202110430 HBr 50p.mp4 opens in my VMS 17 Platinum b 204 using

" Plug-In --- Name: so4compoundplug.dll
  Folder: C:\Program Files\VEGAS\Movie Studio Platinum 17.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\so4compoundplug
  Format: AVC"

Nothing checked in File I/O options, Hardware Decoder To Use: Auto (Intel QSV).

Thanks @vkmast does it play as smoothly in 17 as 16?

@EricLNZ Best (Auto) in both, Preview constant 50p. (Not any high-end set-up)

Eric, I don't see directly a difference (but I have always Legacy AVC Encoding enabled.) What's the reason to convert i50 to p50 before editing?

@3POINT Only occasionally when I want to slow a clip down with resampling disabled. There's a long standing Vegas bug in that it doesn't deinterlace before duplicating frames so on playback the fields jump backwards and forwards. It does deinterlace when resampling is enabled, which is what I use most times I slow down.
