VP-19 Pro (Build 538) - Why Update SO Slow? < 1 Mb per MINUTE)??

Soniclight-2.0 wrote on 3/25/2022, 2:10 PM

This is the second update in a month I am asked to do. Both times insanely slow.

The small network meter at top of window after about 10 minutes of download:

This is a screenshot after about 20 minutes...

My actual download speed test (consistent at all times):

At this speed, that upgrade should have taken about 3.2 minutes total. As of writing this, the upgrade pop up shows only 29% - and I had time to create ALL of the screenshots for this post.

This does not happen with other major software, i.e. Cubase with full NI Kontakt.
WHAT is going on?

Until they fix it, if you go to the news section of this forum, you can download it in the update announcement thread at full speed.

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

AND as happened before, after waiting over an hour for this update, Vegas askes me to choose update immediately or wait until program closes. I chose immediately, and I'm back to the beginning have to download everything all over again. PLEASE HELP.

Soniclight-2.0 wrote on 3/25/2022, 3:20 PM

@fr0sty - I tried at this News posting for what seems to be it (Version 550), but clicking the download link listed there takes me to...

"Your are now leaving the community.
You will be automatically forwarded in 0 seconds. To continue immediately, simply click https://rdir.magix.net/?page=T6M4247Y55CE."

I did so, NOTHING HAPPENS. The only thing I know so far is that I'm not the only one having this issue.

DMT3 wrote on 3/25/2022, 3:23 PM

That link begins an auto download, not a link to a page.

vkmast wrote on 3/25/2022, 3:29 PM

@Soniclight-2.0 You're most likely trying to download with Chrome. It may not download without the workaround of copying the link text and pasting it to the browser. I just did that (again) earlier today when I did the VP 19 b550 install on a third device. Try that or use another browser.

The link in the News "posting" works.

Soniclight-2.0 wrote on 3/25/2022, 4:00 PM

@DMT3 and @vkmast - I'll try the workaround - yes, I use Chrome - but if it is an auto-download, then where is it saved? Whether I can do it that way, one shouldn't need to do this at all.

The in-Vegas update should work. It still doesn't for me:

I waited for the second slow update to finish (a bit faster than the first for some reason), and this time chose to install after prog closes. I closed it. Waited a few seconds, then relaunched Vegas. Got this over the same "There is an update for Vegas Pro 19.0" floater screen:

Choosing either Yes or No still results in having to download everything again. So I ignore it and exit Vegas again and make sure it is not running looking at Windows Task Manager and Sysinternals Process Explorer.

I open Vegas again, and the above does not appear, but once again it's like I never updated and asks to re-download again. I've done this TWICE. Absolutely infuriating.

DMT3 wrote on 3/25/2022, 4:03 PM

I use Chrome, it downloaded to my DOWNLOAD default folder.

Soniclight-2.0 wrote on 3/25/2022, 4:07 PM

BTW, I tried to copy the download into Microsoft Edge (which I almost never use) instead of Chrome, both logged in at the forum and not, and the same thing comes up:

Those two downloads DID occur at the correct speed (about 3 minutes each), but end up as "Unconfirmed" and thus useless:

I don't have any anti-virus software running aside from native Win 10 Defender.

As to trying with Chrome again, I disabled some privacy and ad blocker type extensions to see if the above mentioned redirect page with countdown would work. It still didn't work even when I copied the link into and as a new tab. The tab loaded nothing with "blocked" as the last part of the URL.

On the original page, hovering over the live https://rdir.magix.net/?page=T6M4247Y55CE." shows a "javascript:void(0);"

Something is blocking Chrome from downloading this (doesn't have problem with other downloads with extensions active). And I can't get it down in-Vegas. I give up. To hell with the update.

Soniclight-2.0 wrote on 3/25/2022, 4:42 PM

I use Chrome, it downloaded to my DOWNLOAD default folder.

I've done an entire drive check including that location which is on my F: drive then the whole of my C: in case it went to some default Windows location, nothing there. I don't even know what the file name is or should be either.

vkmast wrote on 3/25/2022, 4:45 PM

Did you try copying the link text to your Chrome browser? I've needed to use this workaround countless times and successfully. I do get often a "javascript:void(0)" with Chrome as well but not every time.

Btw, in the meantime I downloaded and installed b550 on another device. The download took 2...3 minutes and it was installed, registered and activated in less than 2 minutes after that. As with @DMT3, the download went to the download default folder and could be opened from there. It did show first as "unconfirmed" but the actual file showed a bit later. The size is indeed 766 188 KB.

My first b550 download was from the in-app prompt on the release day and it took 2...3 hours. (The reason seems to be the limited bandwidth with the server.) I chose to install "after the program is closed" and it happened without a hitch. The download is in this case here VEGASUpdate.exe in C:\Users\my username\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\19.0. After the install that .exe disappears.

Btw, do you have enough free space for the install?

Soniclight-2.0 wrote on 3/25/2022, 4:47 PM

All I want to do until this is fixed is turn of the update notifier. Where? I have Preferences/General/"Use Newsfeed to stay informed about VEGAS product updates" unchecked already.

A quick way to do this:

This link text which helped you download the 550 build:

https://rdir.magix.net/?page=T6M4247Y55CE

Do not click on it. This will give your the blocked Javascript error.

INSTEAD:

Copy the link as the text into your Chrome or browser tab.

https://rdir.magix.net/?page=T6M4247Y55CE

Then hit return

You will then get the option to save the exe build file:

Hope this helps.

@vkmast - Well, finally.... the third download and install (VEGAS_Pro_19.0.0.550_DE-EN-FR-ES_5738C9B6.exe) using Edge worked. Maybe I need to wait a few days before updating for even you experienced really slow down server issues.

Truth is over the many years using Windows, sometimes having to manually download a patch or some update that Windows Update kept failing to install has had the same problem. Which is puzzling. You'd think such huge companies could run their servers efficiently. Magix isn't MS, but still. They should fix this.

@indy-p Thanks. As stated to @vkmast, I finally solved this but having to use MS Edge. I was getting nowhere with Chrome.

vkmast wrote on 3/25/2022, 5:24 PM

@indy-p you noticed that I did mention this earlier to the OP?. Don't know why it does not work with Chrome for him. It works for me consistently.

Case closed, I suppose.

Soniclight-2.0 wrote on 3/25/2022, 5:36 PM

Case closed, I suppose.

Mercifully so. To play it safe, I saved the 550 update .exe in my backup location in case something goes wrong.
