What would be best type of program and/or version?

My son is wising to do some gaming with some friends and post videos on YouTube. They are newbies to this and it may be a short lived thing too,you know how teens can be. Anyway,he wants me to order a Sony Vegas editing program. There are several versions, older as well,13,14,15, movie Maker, pro, suite, platinum. I've been trying to read up,but am still not sure that an older version may not do for them, but also don't know that the movie Maker version wouldn't do as well. Is there anything that newer versions have that the older don't and also is there anything that say platinum version has that movie Maker wouldn't,that would be needed for them to post their videos. I just don't want him to waste his money on an expensive program with a whole lot of funky things he's never going to use, when he could go for a less expensive version that will get the job done. Thanks for ainfo you can share.

Note that only the latest versions (currently # 15) are available from the MAGIX Vegas site, i.e. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/int/

If you decide on a Magix Vegas program, you should probably consider Vegas Movie Studio 15 Platinum. The basic version has too many limitations.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/int/vegas-movie-studio-platinum/

(Check your territory's version of that URL, including "us", "de", "gb", "ca", "int" etc.)

The Sony VEGAS Pro and Movie Studio product lines were taken over by MAGIX in 2016. The versions 14 and later are Magix.

As you say, it could be a fade, so not really worth investing much money until he and you know it's a lasting passion. That said, of course the program he'll use may cool down any budding passion very fast if it crashes every two minutes and he can't get anything done.

So what I'd say is that the best software in your situation is the most stable one, not so much the one with most features. This was my very own rationale the first time I purchased Movie Studio - out of a bunch I'd tried, it was by far the most stable on my hardware at the time.

And that's a bit of the point: what hardware you have may have an impact on stability, together with the state of the OS on your machine.

So my best recommendation is to simply go and download demos of a few of them, work them a little and have a feel on the stability.
