Where is the SEARCH. Plus, which Canon 80D settings? mov or mpg?

Chanimal wrote on 9/24/2016, 9:08 PM

First, where is the amazing SEARCH capabilities we've had with the forum?  I don't see a search button.

2nd, I just picked up the Canon 80D. I have two format options for video--MOV or MP4.  Which one should I save in that will be best quality and I can edit within Vegas.  Vegas used to choke on MOV files from iPhones.  Seems ok now.

I know these extensions are just containers, but I just need to setup my camera correctly.  I do NOT want to transcode--if that is the only option then I made a bad decision.  I just want to open the files and edit--but which format for my camera should I select?

Thanks

Right now there is no search feature. Supposedly it is comming. MAGIX has chosen to develop their own forum software and IMO a lot of things are lacking right now.

Either format will be fine. Vegas will actually bypass Quicktime for the MOV files and decode with its internal codecs. It has been doing that bypass for some time with DSLR MOV files. AVC video and PCM audio.

As for iPhone or any phone. Whatever. They are not a real video cameras and they always seems to generate variable frame rate video which does not edit well. The video and audio getting out of sync due to the VFR.

You will be fine.  My 5D Mrk III have no problem here.  Just drop your footage in to Vegas timeline and edit away.

I miss the search terribly. Vegas forum search was huge for me.  It gave me answers quickly on so many problems.  Huge loss.  Hoping Magix gets that going soon.

No Search option - yet.

Canon 80D:

Well, consider your final output. I try and match my frame rate of the camera to make it easy for VEGAS and me!

Here's  your options from the Canon site:

1920 x 1080 (59.94, 50 fps) inter-frame
1920 x 1080 (29.97, 25, 23.98 fps) intra or inter frame
1920 x 1080 (29.97, 25) lite inter-frame
1280 x 720 (59.94, 50 fps) inter-frame
1280 x 720 (29.97, 25) lite inter-frame

As I'm in UK I'd go with 1920x1080 25fps. My SX50 Bridge only does 23.98 and it's a pig for DVDs.  The higher frame rate would be an option for getting dreamy slow motion.

Bottom line, IMHO, there's nothing there that would make me want to transcode for slippery editing in Vegas. But then, when I research any camera I get some sample outputs and test 'em!

Within the setup, the 80d can save video as a MOV or an Mpg4 format, plus the frame rate options you listed above. One of the questions is, which should I select (MOV or Mpg4)?

BTW, based on an email I received from Sony over a  decade ago, Sony made their own forum software (did not use vBulletin or other popular applications).  I'm surprised Magix was able to even import all the years of threads and transition folks over--thank goodness, it was one of the most valuable resources and pre-built community they could have obtained with their purchase.

GOOD things about this forum. Even though they are working on the search, some other features are better--the ability to tag a thread as the solution, plus edit previous comments, add a signature and most important--follow a relevent post. Now if only it had a spell checker! ;-)

PS - I would change the label, "comment" to "post comment" - more obvious.

Search function is still under development, but Magix forum team said that it already working on their internal development test, so I think we can expect about that function very soon...

Alternatively, you can depend on Google's search function for some times now, see here for more: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/how-do-i-search-the-forum--103150/

As for MP4 vs MOV, this seems similar issue too to DJI Osmo's container option. I selected MOV option, and not much trouble.

I made a note fromfound an older thread here which suggests going to the following web address to undertake a search (and Ibelieve the eh function is on te list to be inroduced idc).

http/www.forum-archive.magix.info/search.asp

I haven't tried it yet but why not give it ago?

Richard, it searches OK old posts for the dates until the SCS forums were closed. It does not search this forum.

Richard Jones wrote on 9/26/2016, 4:29 AM

Thank you. At least the vast bulk of information is available to us which is something but this Magix forum is itself growing in size quite quickly which is beginning to highlight the need for a Search function --- but I do hope this will embrace both the SCS Forums and this one in a single exercise.
