see what shows in Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel.
I'm not aware of this kind of a bug.

Add/Remove says Ver. 756 also.

I downloaded and ran the 896 installer 3 times and got the same results each time - the installer ran to completion with no errors, but VMS still says it is Ver. 756.

Additionally, I checked the EXE file Properties and that says it is Ver. 756 with Date Modified = 1/28/2013. So it seems the Installer program is doing something other that what it should.

I wonder what that is.

Which version of Sony Windows Installer Preloader did you get?
I have 1.0.0.22 (178 MB) with 12b756 and 1.0.0.23 (185 MB) with 12b896.

I did install an update to a different piece of software OK, so I know the installation process on my system is not broken.

So I tried de-installing my current version and then running the new installer again.

This was a bad idea.

The installer said it completed ok but in fact installed nothing. So I had to restore my Movie Studio Platinum 12 directory from a backup.

Now when I start it I get these error messages:

I am not aware of any plug-ins I have; I've never purchased or installed any. So things are even more confusing than ever.

Those are all standard plugins (included). I would suggest that you follow the instructions for clean install. Clean Install. Note that there are other KB artciles depending on your OS.

For the record, mine says, 896 (64 bit system)...

Is your OS 32 bit or 64 bit? If it is 32 bit, you should be installing 895.

I followed the instructions for the "Clean Uninstall" after having made a backup of my entire registry. But becuase I have DVD Architectc installed as well as VMS, instead of deleting the registry entries named Sony I deleted the ones named Vegas Movie Studio.

I did not actually de-install VMS itself because in the past I was always able to just run the update program and have it update my current version. So I ran the 896 installer and it ran to completion with no error.

But when I started VMS I got the Registration page, and I could not get past that. It refused my legit S/N and Machine # by giving me an "Error 41" message (whatever that is) so I went back and manually removed the VMS folder from Program Files.

Then I re-ran the 896 installer and got the same results - nothing got installed, not even the desktop shortcut. So I ran the installer again, this time specifying a different directory for the 896 software. Again, nothing got installed, although the folder I specified did get created.

So I deleted this empty folder and also all the Movie Studio subfolders in AppData Local, LocalLow, and Roaming, and ran the 896 installer again.

Nada - nothing got installed. So I restored my registry from the RegEdit backup, restored Vegas and the AppData folders from my standard backup, and now I have 756 back OK.

I did solve the problem of the missing plugins by restoring the AppData folders, so that's nice.

I reckon I'll be stuck with 756 until I decide to switch to another editor. I'm not looking forward to that, but oh well.

I can understand that because my current system is a new machine I built myself that included the boot drive from my previous system. So it makes sense that Sony thinks I have installed the software on a different machine.

I'll contact them and see if I can straighten it out.

Different computer / same computer ... doesn't matter at all. They simply count the NUMBER of registrations and when you go over that count you get the error.

I got a nice reply from SCS Support saying they upped my registration count and that I should try to install 896 again. Here's what I reported to them:

1. Ran 896 installer - completed with no errors but nothing got installed.
2. Backed up current registry
3. Used RegEdit to remove all hives relating to Sony Vegas Movie Studio from HKCU\Software and HKLM\Software
4. Deleted Program Files\Sony
5. Ran 896 installer again - completed with no errors but nothing got installed
6. Ran 896 installer again, this time specifying a different folder (Program Files\Sony) for installation; again noithing was installed
7. Restored registry from backup file created in Step 2
8. Restored Program FIles\Sony using my backup/restore software
9. Verified that Ver. 756 runs OK.

So the saga continues........

PROBLEM RESOLVED!!

Another user reminded me if the need to have QuickTIme installed in order for the VMS installer to operate. I discovered this myself several releases ago but completely forgot about it. At any rate, here's how I fixed the problem:

I got the QuickTIme installer and ran it. It crashed, saying it could not read a file in my Temp directory. So I looked in the Temp directory and verified that the file was OK.

My system has 2 SSD drives and 2 hard drives (long story); one SSD is my boot drive (with all software) and the other is where I put page, temp, My Documents, etc. So I thought maybe there was some sort of problem reading from the SSD. So I changed Temp to point to one of my HDDs, rebooted, and re-ran the QuickTIme installer.

This time it worked A-OK so I figured why not give 896 a try. So I did - and it worked!

At this point I can;t say if the original problem had to do with QuickTime or with my Temp files being located on an SSD. My guess is it was QuickTIme, but that's just a guess. I will do some investigating about TEMP on an SSD; I have been operating like that for a long time and never had a problem until now.

I ran a ChkDisk on my SSD drive where I had received the error message from the QuickTime installer. Sure enough, ChkDisk found some errors:

Correcting errors in the master file table BITMAP attribute
Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap

There was no further explanation or details of what these corrections were, but I guess there's a possibility they might have contributed to my installation problem.

I still think the major cause was QuickTime.
