Why is there no BAK file?

I was working on a project than when i tried to open it it was an unsupported file. When i tried to Look for a BAK file there was none, alsi there r no autosaves for the file too. What do i do to recover the damage project, without autosave or A Bak file?

Thanks vkmast. This also applies to MovieStudio as I get BAK files despite having autosave turned off. As the item says they are independent.
