Activating Preview Screen disables all controls

Leee14 wrote on 12/14/2017, 10:42 AM

I am using the trial version of Movie Studio Platinum 14 (build 148) and was planning to purchase it. I already own (and is installed) Vegas Pro 13, and I also have the trial version of Vegas Pro 15 installed. I mention this because it may be a factor in my problem. My PC is running Windows 10 (64-bit) latest version.

Whenever I activate the preview screen [Edit: On external monitor], it seems to make the entire program (all of the controls) not function with my mouse.
I can SEE the interface and all the controls on my screen, but when I try to click or mouse over any of the controls, the mouse pointer is actually "seeing" my desktop underneath.
For example, if I move the mouse over a desktop icon (which is underneath the running Movie Studio), I'll get a mouse over pop-up of that icon. So I can double click on a desktop icon right THROUGH the Movie Studio interface. As far as the mouse and pointer is concerned, the Movie Studio screen and interface is not even there.

This seems to only happen when I activate the preview screen (on my second monitor). It won't even let me click on the red X in the top right corner to close the program, instead it will click on a desktop icon that's underneath it. The only way I can access the menus or close the program is by using the keyboard shortcuts. When I restart Movie Studio, everything is fine again, until I open the preview screen.

I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem? I think it MAY have something to do with my Radeon video card settings or drivers (they are up to date), or the fact that I have installed and uninstalled a couple of the trial versions.
I also had a problem with opening MP4 files and tried to download and install the latest Microsoft.Net drivers (which are also up to date) I'm also wondering if this problem occurs on Vegas Pro 15, which I am considering buying if this problem doesn't exist for that software. Right now I can't open Vegas Pro 13 or 15 because it hangs up on my VST plugins.

Thanks for any advice!

Sorry I should have been more clear. It's the option to Video Preview on External Monitor. Not the normal preview screen in the main user interface. So whenever I activate the preview on my 2nd monitor, that's when the problems start.

My settings are exactly the same as in the image you posted.

I don't understand your second question:
"Did you choose the same you want and have set in Windows or your GPU Settings?"
Are you sure you typed that correctly, because I can't figure out what you're trying to ask.

As I already said in my original post, all my settings are correct. I am able to get the 2nd monitor to function as an external preview monitor, it's only AFTER I am previewing my video on the external monitor that the problems start (as described in my first post). Once I begin previewing on external monitor, the video display of the main user interface and mouse pointer act as if it's not even there. I can click on my Windows desktop icons RIGHT THROUGH the main interface of Movie Studio. That is the problem!

That is the problem!

I understood, that is not normal and I do not see such things on my installation. So if your settings in Windows and for the connected devices are all correct I can't help you any further. Sorry.

Okay, well thanks for trying to help. I appreciate it.

If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know. I've already spent a few hours on trying to figure this out.
Next I'm going to get one of those uninstall programs, that gets rid of every bit of data of the program that you uninstall. The normal Windows uninstall tool, always leaves remnants of uninstalled programs. So that's the next thing I'll try since I have uninstalled and reinstalled Vegas Pro or Movie Studio several times (with several different versions).

SOLVED: Thanks to * * from Magix Support, he suggested putting the program in Compatibility Mode (Windows 8) and that fixed the problem, it works perfectly now. Thank you!

Well that didn't last long. Today when I tried to use the external preview monitor again, (with compatibility mode and run as Administrator enabled), I got the same problem again as described in my original post. Very frustrating.

Hm.. which graphics card do you have? And which driver? Also, the preview monitor driver? It's a wild shot of course, but from what you describe it sounds like a card (driver) issue, probably combined with the specific way MS14 uses the Windows APIs.

I am using a XFX Radeon R9 270X graphics card, with the latest driver                                                   23.20.15002.11 released on December 5 2017
I have a two monitor setup and the second monitor is used as the external preview monitor (both monitors are controlled by the same graphics card and drivers.)

Have you tried swapping the two (set the primary as secondary and vice-versa at Windows level, I mean)

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a try.
