An error has occured while opening a codec

Patrick P. wrote on 7/29/2012, 9:43 PM
Vegas Movie Studio 11 is having trouble importing video files.

The files were produced from a late model JVC camcorder purchased in the UK, this is not my camera.

These UK files play great on VLC media player.

The video file format was .mov and have since try covering the files to .avi with the same error result.

The video files from my JVC camcorder works great, file suffix .mts.

Please, does someone have a solution?

Thought you said they were MOV files?
Patrick P. wrote on 7/31/2012, 3:25 PM
They were .mov but I converted to .avi and i'm getting the same the same error.

Would you like to post the .mov as well?
I'll see if I still have them.

My converting program works well I have used it many times.

What is it about the file codec that movie studio platinum 11 that doen't like?
musicvid10 wrote on 7/31/2012, 4:39 PM
Not interested in your "conversion". In no event would Vegas open VBR (MP3) audio in a VFW AVI environment.

If you would like a little help, provide MediaInfo properties and upload a sample somewhere of your original camcorder files, thanks.

This is an orginal file sample, which is .mod not .mov.

Try this link to download the video file sample and let me know if you have trouble.

The file video standard is PAL would that cause codec error?

Thanks for your help.

Patrick,
Import Media > Files of type: change All Media Files to All Files.
Right-click the "clip" (event on the timeline), in Properties, change the Pixel aspect ratio to PAL DV Widescreen.
Or try to find the SDCopy freeware program somewhere. Set the wide-screen flag there.

Goes to show that the original MediaInfo properties were needed like musicvid said.

No problem importing clip on my system (VMV10).
MarkWWW wrote on 8/1/2012, 9:09 AM
Try renaming these files from *.mod to *.mpg. This will often allow these JVC .mod (stands for MPG on disc) files to be opened correctly.

"This is an orginal file sample, which is .mod not .mov."

That's what I thought. Rename the extension as MarkWWW suggested.
If that doesn't solve it, we'll help you remux it to something Vegas can open.

I can't download your file because dropbox says it isn't there.
vkmast wrote on 8/1/2012, 12:01 PM
I did manage to download that file and VMS11 imports it just fine using the methods I suggested. Renaming should work too, in fact SDcopy does batch rename them (.mod > .mpg).
Patrick P. wrote on 8/1/2012, 3:21 PM
Tried SDCopy but the error presists.

Not sure of what you are saying in the first two lines. I find no All Files in Files of type just, All Media Files. How can I click on a clip in the time line when I can't import?

Sorry, I'm not understanding.

Patrick P. wrote on 8/1/2012, 3:32 PM
Sorry, try again, I took file down for a short bit but its back up now, same link as before.

Renaming the file didn't work for me.
musicvid10 wrote on 8/1/2012, 3:45 PM
With dropbox running, right-click on the file in your Public folder, copy the Public Link, and post it here. Your original link is not working at this end.

Patrick,
I'm using VMStudio 11 Platinum and am able to get these

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/50473571/jvcmod.JPG
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/50473571/jvcmodontl.JPG
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/50473571/modpar.JPG
or
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/50473571/sdcopyimportmod.JPG

You don't? Did you click that small black triangle in the Files of type box in VMS?

Patrick P. wrote on 8/1/2012, 6:04 PM
In pop up box of import media, the pull down box at "Files of types" yes but, what is
VMS?

If anyone needs the file link again try this link:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ay6ugbookimhn9a/MOV07C.MOD?m

Just X out the share box.

Thanks.

Thanks vkmast and all for your help it seems I missed that in the scrol bar.

The All Files(**) works.

Thanks again.

vkmast wrote on 8/1/2012, 6:21 PM
Patrick,
that's good. Your other file opens OK here too using the method(s) described.

By the way, VMS usually here means just Vegas Movie Studio ;)
musicvid10 wrote on 8/1/2012, 8:25 PM
Link now works.
File plays and loads fine in Vegas as mpeg-2 with or without the .MOD extension.
Sorry I can't help further; unable to duplicate your results.
Have you by chance ever installed a codec "pack" on your system?
