Any easy way to speed up a clip 10x to 100x (i.e. more than 4x)

peterh337 wrote on 12/1/2018, 8:12 AM

This was discussed years ago re v13 or some such, and I see v16 has the same x4 max limitation, where you drag the RH end of a clip to shorten it.

I know about the option of rendering the clip after a x4 speedup, importing it, doing another 4x, rendering again, etc. And there is some complicated way of nesting projects.

Using Velocity Envelope you can speed a Video Event up to 1000 % in one go.

vkmast wrote on 12/1/2018, 9:35 AM

The change came with Vegas Pro 14. "Increased the top-end of the range of event Velocity envelopes to 1,000% to increase the maximum possible overall velocity of video on the timeline to 40 times normal speed (in conjunction with the Playback rate event property)." (From online Help "What's new in this version")

Hmmm I am confused :)

In this menu (right-click on the clip, or I should say Event) you can go up to 4x

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20181201332842915.jpg

It does indeed speed it up 4x, and pads the remaining 3/4 of the clip with what looks like random video; in the case I tried just now it takes something from the start of the project. Sometimes when I choose 4x it pads only the last 50% or so...

And same with this tool (which does the same thing as the above menu)

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20181201082853615.jpg

There is a funny thing though. If you do the 4x speedup via the menu, the clip doesn't get shorter on the timeline (which is obviously wrong - it should shrink by 4x) and it just does the padding. If I use the sliding method then it gets shorter ok - obviously since that is what one is doing.

I have just tested it in v14 and v16.

But anyway you say 1000% which is 10x. How do I get that? I see vkmast's new reply above, but I don't get how one calculates the desired values. Also using the playback rate doesn't make the event shorter, which logically it should.

You did not read Marco well, he was talking about an (velocity)envelope. Envelopes you can add by right click on the videofile only and choose Insert Envelope (velocity)

Combining the ctrl-drag (playback rate) with velocity envelope you can speed up to 40x.

If you need even more, you can try Vegasaur's rocketspeed.

Eagle Six wrote on 12/1/2018, 10:32 AM

Left click on the event you want to speed up (event on the track in the timeline) to select it. Then right click and select from the menu 'Insert/Remove Envelope', then select 'Velocity'. This will place a horizontal velocity envelope line on the event toward the bottom at the normal play back speed position. Grab this line and move it up towards the top of the event and as you do this it will display the value up to a maximum of 1000%.

Along the top of the event there will be 9 little black tick (index) marks, which separate the event into 10 equal sections, each being a repeat of the event at that faster playback speed. Grab the end of the event and pull the end to the left until the end aligns with the first tick mark. Your done!

Thank you.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to quite work.

This is the event

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20181201352860120.jpg

So I add the velocity envelope

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20181201352870220.jpg

and I see the envelope line

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20181201192880320.jpg

Now I move it up to "1000%" but as you can see there is just one tick mark, approx 1/6 of the way from the left

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20181201122890420.jpg

and indeed the stuff between the start and the tick mark is the desired footage, compressed in time about 6x, and the stuff after the tick mark is just garbage. Well it is video taken from the very start of the project - from the leftmost clip on the timeline. This is OK since we don't want it anyway, so I cut it off

by doing a Split there

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20181201252900720.jpg

or by dragging the RHS end back to the tick mark

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20181201542910920.jpg

So it works, and thank you, but it isn't a 10x speedup. It is some arbitrary number. I could measure it exactly, especially if there was something in the clip Properties telling me the length (but there isn't anything I can see)

The above is v16. I have just tried it in v14 and after sliding up the velocity envelope up "1000%" I get this

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20181201282921720.jpg

and it turns out the desired stuff extends from the LH end to around 27% into the event (where the cursor is shown actually). The tick mark you can see a little further along. The short section between the "real" end and the tick mark is filled with stuff which was present in the original mp4 file but was cut out! It isn't even in the project now. And the small piece of stuff between the tick mark and the RH end is taken from earlier in the project and also had been cut out.

So it sort of does something useful but is rather haphazard.

It's amazing how buggy this program is, despite the apparent number of users. Perhaps most never use these features?

I have posted 2 screen shots. The 1st is after applying the Velocity Envelope and moving the bar to 1000%. You can see there are 9 tick/index marks dividing the length into 10x the normal speed. The 2nd screenshot shows where I dragged the end of the event to the first tick/index mark....done.

Why your system is not working the same way I have no idea. The only thing I can think of is to perform a full reset of your Vegas, deleting the cached application data, as this may have your system confused. Perhaps some others here more familiar have a solution.

Weird. V16 is a new install. Did it yesterday.

I also have v14, fresh install, on a win10 Pro laptop (quad core i7, Dell XPS13-9360). I did check that both Vegas and Vegasaur are ok to install on two machines, btw. That works as per your screenshots.

I have not yet put v16 on that laptop but might try it.

So I did File/New on v16 and loaded the same little mp4 I loaded on the laptop. And it works!

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20181201442931921.jpg

So something in my project is corrupting Vegas.

So I deleted all other tracks and all other events, leaving just one event. Still doesn't work.

So I did a Save As / test1 with just the one event, exited and restarted vegas.

Still doesn't work.

So, I took the project with all the tracks and stuff, deleted all the tracks, and loaded the one bit of media which worked above, and it works!

So whether this feature works or not is related purely to the media you are doing it on.

I can get you the media properties for the two mp4 files...

First, please upload your pictures right to this forum by using this option

To me me all looks normal at you but it'sa pity we cannot controle someting on your pictures because of the lack of a visible time.
Here are my pictures with time in frames compared to yours at the moment of adding the envelope and one off the slide has moved from 100% at the beginning till 1000% at the end. !0 times faster than the normal event and 1000 times faster if the slider first get down to 1 % .

peterh337 wrote on 12/1/2018, 3:30 PM

My reply crossed above.

It is media property dependent.

On further tests, it is not simply the media because loading the "offending" mp4 into the project after I do a "delete all" does work.

So it is something which was done to the timeline, during the several hours of my work on it, which prevented this working, presumably by corrupting vegas. Could it be vegasaur? I am importing a long SRT file.

I won't be able to narrow this down. I am not going to spend the time recreating the project, checking at every point whether what I did is what broke it.

If I could send a DVD with all the stuff to Vegas, they could find out easily enough, but I am sure they don't want to do that.

Final update: I have deleted all the tracks on the project except the one with the mp4, done a save as, exited, restarted v16, and it still doesn't work. So it doesn't appear to be related to vegasaur. It is just something on that one track, which is now just a chopped up mp4 with 1 second wide transitions.

Any portion of that mp4, it doesn't work on. Even if I cut off everything except a clean part of it; it doesn't work on that part. But if I reload that mp4, via drag/drop from the media list on top left, it works on it even without restarting vegas.

Completely bizzare.

Be sure to be able to delete the cached application data,

peterh337 wrote on 12/1/2018, 4:01 PM

Well, control+shift and a double click on the app icon does nothing in win7 :) It doesn't start the app. You have to start the app and press the other two very quickly afterwards.

And it doesn't fix it.

I am now installing v16 on the laptop also.

vkmast wrote on 12/1/2018, 4:06 PM

Were you able to place a checkmark (point 4 in the instructions)?

Eagle Six wrote on 12/1/2018, 4:09 PM

In Windows 7, left click the Vegas icon once, then hold down Shift+Ctrl while double left clicking on the icon. You should get this display

Check the box for 'Delete all cached application data.', then click on 'Yes'

peterh337 wrote on 12/1/2018, 5:02 PM

I am not sure that will show anything new, because if I

- load the whole project (and this function doesn't work, as shown above)
- do a delete-all
- load just the mp4 (which was still in the media list) onto the timeline

then that works ok, on any part or all of the mp4.

So the issue isn't with the mp4 file itself. It is caused by something done in the project.

But if I delete everything in the project except that mp4 on the timeline, it doesn't work on that mp4.

What I haven't tried yet is deleting all the media from the media list (except the mp4). I can't test it right now because v16 is no longer starting; it hangs on the "initialising UI" stage. Doing the reset doesn't make it start. I am off to bed now and tomorrow will try to reboot the PC and perhaps reinstall it. Thankfully I still have v14... which I hope still works :)

peterh337 wrote on 12/2/2018, 2:16 AM

V16 now starts up ok, after I rebooted windows.

No change to the above behaviour though. Clearly some operation during the building of the project (which takes me a few hours) corrupts Vegas and this manifests itself in the velocity profile function. And probably in other places I will never ever find because like most people I use about 1% of the features :)

I have two more movies to do, for this writeup
http://peter2000.co.uk/aviation/elba-greece/
and will see if I can reproduce it, and at which point it starts.

FYI this is what the project looks like

http://peter-ftp.co.uk/screenshots/20181202382941408.jpg

Perhaps the only notable feature is the import of an SRT file containing the GPS data you can see in the preview. This is done with Vegasaur and the several k of subtitles are imported as a single event. I've been doing this for years on various projects. In the past they could not be imported as a single event and the project was uneditable after the import because Vegas ran so slowly, so I used to render it out and then import the rendered file and carry on. Now it is much better. But as I said I don't see the subtitle import is causing this because I can chop the project down to just one piece of the mp4 file, close and restart Vegas, and the velocity feature still fails to work.

peterh337 wrote on 12/2/2018, 9:48 AM

I have managed to create the problem again.

This time the velocity feature does not produce any tick marks at all, on one clip, but works fine on two other much longer ones to the right of it which I have not yet edited.

I am not going to go back now and do it all again to see when the problem started. I have been testing the not yet edited RH clip and that was fine. I didn't test the one immediately being worked on...

If Vegas are reading this (and unless they are incredibly arrogant they will be) I can send them a 50GB blueray disk of the whole project...

j-v wrote on 12/2/2018, 10:24 AM
