Applying a post-edit ripple manually

Sam Hobbs wrote on 1/10/2016, 11:38 AM
I have Movie Studio 13.0 Platinum.

I accidently got into Advanced Mode. Somehow Auto-Ripple got turned off. That was a complete accident. I then edited the video by removing portions. I assumed I would be able to adjust (ripple) the video but then I was unable to do that.

The help instructions say "From the Edit menu, choose Post Edit Ripple". I see that in Advanced mode but the sub-menus are disabled. How do I enable the sub-menus?

Update: somehow the sub-menu was enabled after I posted this. I think the help instructions need to be updated but perhaps this thread will help others. If someone can explain why the sub-menu is disabled sometimes then that will help. However the manual ripple did not remove all the gaps. I was able to drag and drop portions. Perhaps (a link to) that procedure should be added to the help for doing a manual ripple.

Do your Post Edit Ripple immediately after you perform an edit. You might remember that you can also post edit ripple manually on the affected tracks just pressing F. There are shortcuts for the other options available as well.

Search the forums to see how you can also remove the gaps afterwards. You'll find advice such as
"turn on auto-ripple, double-click in the space between the events, Edit menu > Cut".

I did look at the documentation and I described the results of that.

I did search the forums and I described the results of that. I found only one relevant thread. If there are any threads older than two years then the forums search did not let me find it or them.

As for doing the ripple after an edit, it is better to use Auto-Ripple. I tried to make it clear that it was an accident that I had it turned off.

Probably the shortcuts should be added to the relevant documentation.

Post Edit Ripple is "post edit".
The shortcuts are in the relevant documentation.
See online help (F1) (Shortcuts tables) or
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/webhelp/moviestudioplatinum/13/enu/index.htm#Post_Edit_Ripple.htm
(The same text is in online Help.)

>>>"As for doing the ripple after an edit, it is better to use Auto-Ripple."<<<

"Search" would show that many of the users do not always agree with that.
See e.g. Ripple Hell.
In addition, an unfortunate change re Ripple took place in v 13.
See e.g. Ripple indication.

"Search by Date: Any Date" will find older threads.

I'm not sure if you got your answer. Post-Ripple only works on the last move that you made. So if you made 5 moves, only the last one will ripple and the other 4 will not. There is no way to get the previous moves to ripple.

The best you can do now is to turn on Auto-Ripple and delete the gaps that were caused by having Ripple Off and the events will ripple as you delete the gaps. That's as good as it gets.

Thanks for clarifying, JR.
Indeed, maybe "Do your Post Edit Ripple " was not clear enough.
"Post-Ripple only works on the last move that you made." says it like it is.

Btw, VASST have the EventTools plug-in (by JR in fact), which is able to "close event gaps".

MSPlatinum 13 (which the OP has) does not now have some of the "Delete" options which were in earlier MSP versions and are still in VPro 13. That is why in my first post I mentioned using "Edit menu > Cut".
