Each version had different serial numbers.

3POINT wrote on 12/3/2022, 2:34 PM

You can only download and reinstall previous versions when you bought them at the time when they were released.

Pity. I was thinking of buying the Humble Bundle offer for 18, but use a previous version, because I've read version 18 had major stability issues.
Thanks for your answer.

I would argue that this is not the case, certainly for XAVCS MP4 codec V18 was very stable for me and arguably the best looking.

I'd buy and use it as 18.527 was quite stable compared to VP 15-17 and had most of the modern features Vegas has today.

Yannis wrote on 12/5/2022, 7:20 AM

I'm on version 15, and it's OK for the stuff I edit (nothing fancy, amateur stuff). It crashes every once in a while, but not too often really.
The thing is I've read many horror stories about 18, even the last build, and I'm not sure I have the time to invest in testing it, if the chances of failure are high. So I was thinking of buying 18 in order to use 16 or 17, but it seems it's not possible.

RogerS wrote on 12/5/2022, 7:34 AM

I had 15-18 and 15 and 16 had the most issues by far.

If it works with 15 it most likely works with 18/19 as well. The chances of failure are not high, they are lower than with 15 which had new but somewhat buggy decoders.

The cost of getting Vegas 18 is how much? $25? While I am not one to toss money away, I've spent more than that going out to eat when I can fix myself (better... if wife prepares) something to eat.

While reading what people wrote about a piece of software you are considering is a good thing, you will be reading more about problems than successes. Very few people will write that the software is working great for them. It's the same is most other forums too.

I found 18 quite stable of my computer listed in my Signature. But I know of no software that gives you access to past versions when you buy the current or on sale version.

I'm in the music business, and it's very common to have access to earlier versions of software you buy, actually.

While I'm not going to get hungry if I spend $25 on a program, I'd still like it to work properly.

You are right though, people don't start forum threads to write how satisfied they are with the program they bought. It just seems that with version 18 the complaints were more than the expected normal number. I mean, it's even mentioned on Wikipedia.

The best thing for me to do would be to just demo the program, but I don't have much free time these days for spending hours on checking its stability. Most probably I will install the demo, and if it opens correctly a few older projects, I will buy it and hope for the best.

If one had purchased a previous version or Vegas and upgraded to the next version, both can be installed and activated on the same PC. They will also coexist without issue. For instance, I have Sound Forge Pro 10 through 16 installed and activated on my laptop. Vegas is the same and many folks have multiple versions of Vegas.

This does not apply to the '365' subscription version though, where only one (1) version can be activated at a time. It does not necessarily have to be the current build though.

This comment may explain at least the VEGAS stance regarding offering old versions at heavily discounted prices. Note also that MAGIX offers only the latest VEGAS at its product pages.

I found on Google a site that links to a Magix server where I downloaded the trial version of VP18.

I know, but this is different to what I'm talking about, isn't it?
It would be weird to not be allowed to install a version for which you've made a separate payment, like the case you are talking about.

Reyfox wrote on 12/5/2022, 5:19 PM

That isn't a Magix server... more like an unauthorized server with who knows what attached to the download.

I wouldn't even click on it.... @vkmast?

Yes, but you need a trial activation code which Magix don't supply for old versions.

There are also links available on this forum for earlier versions but again you need an activation code. So if you don't have a licence the download is of no use to you.

I completed the installation, started the program for the first time, chose the option to use it as a trial, and Magix sent to my email address an activation code for it.

Why do you guys find it so weird? After all, since Magix allows older versions to be sold, it's only fair to give the potential customers the option to test before buying.

RogerS wrote on 12/5/2022, 7:55 PM

I thought any version of Vegas was a trial until a serial was entered. Plenty of downloads to be had here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-where-can-i-download-vegas-pro-and-other-vegas-software--104782/

One of the main complaints against 18 at the end was the removal of Dolby-licensed codecs but if that doesn't affect you it's a non-issue.

EricLNZ wrote on 12/5/2022, 9:04 PM

@Yannis The serial number you received would be for VP18 which is what is currently given with the HumbleBundle offer. So of course a serial number is available, although I'm surprised a trial serial is provided. HumbleBundle offers don't last for ever so you may need to act quickly to purchase it from HB and get a permanent licence.

Yannis wrote on 12/5/2022, 9:38 PM

Yes, it's a good thing to be able to test a program before buying it. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I've bought many Humble Bundle offers through the years, so I know how it works. I still have more than two weeks to test the program before the offer ends, and if my first impressions are not as terrible as some user experiences I've been reading about, I'm going to go ahead and buy it.
