Can no longer burn DVD+R DL DVDs

A-ROB wrote on 11/5/2011, 5:39 PM
I've always been able to burn DVD+R DL (verbatim) discs until recently. DVDA 5.0b and 5.2 now way there is a problem setting the drives power settings and that the disc media is to blame. I am using the same Verbatim media as always and have tried two different types. I tried using Power2Go and also received an error message--below. Can anybody help?

"DVDA 5.0b and 5.2 now way there is a problem setting the drives power settings and that the disc media is to blame."

Could you rephrase that sentence? I don't understand what you are saying.

Can you burn single layer DVDs OK?

Can you make a DL image without burning OK?

Could you give the precise details of what happens when you try to burn a DL DVD?

What build number of DVDA are you using? Have you updated it recently?

DVDA 5.0b and 5.2 (latest build) both hang at somewhere around 45% of burn and give an error something like "can't manage dvd laser power setting, DVD media is to blame".

Yes, DVDA will create the project/image just fine.

Yes, single layer DVDs burn fine.

Here are the details. I captured some VHS tapes as mpeg-2 via a hardware encoder and imported them into DVDA. Produced the project/image folders and started burn. The burn hangs at 45% or so. I then tried to burn a DVD-ROM with just the raw mpeg-2 files n Power2GO and it also hangs before finishing. I then moved the two mpeg-2 files over to a different PC, a XP machine with DVDA 5.2 32bit and a different DVD burner drive and it hangs there too. So, I converted the mpeg-2 files to a M2v (DVDA template) and AC3 file to see if the original mpeg-2 files were to blame, but the new files hang during burning too. Ugh.

Could the trouble be with your discs? Have you changed the brand you use lately? The general consensus seems to be that there's only one reliable DVD+R DL media.
Also you might want to try to burn in ImgBurn and see what happens there.

Here is the DVDA error message. I've also tried Imgburn and it also failed.

An update, I bought a few memorex DVD+R DL at Office Max and the first one burned perfectly. Yeah!

I was skeptical that it could really be a disc problem since I had used these Verbatim discs many times before and they had worked perfectly. These have been on my shelf for probably a year and I had gotten down to the last few of them. I tried both the branded 2.4x Verbatim DVD+R DL with the purple wrapping, and the white inkjet 2.4x DVD+R DL 95123. Neither of these works anymore! I can confirm this because I tried to burn them on a different burner/PC entirely with the same error message. So beware, these discs degraded over the period of 12 months on my shelf! What does this mean for the ones that I've already burned successfully over the years? I am afraid to think about it...

Glad you found the cause. I recently had trouble with some Verb +R DL's also. It turned out one of my burners did not like them, but the other three burned OK. Same package, same speed etc.

Could exposure to heat or light be responsible for the failure of your DLs? I try to keep my blanks in a dark cupboard although some gremlin tends to leave the door open at times! Even so I have never had failure of a batch of Verbatims. I always test my burns afterwards for PI and PIF errors using KProbe2.
