Can't capture USB web camera

Chuck-Berg wrote on 9/15/2020, 3:32 PM

I am running Movie Studio 17.0 with the latest update from this morning. When I run "Vegas Capture..." I can see the preview from my web camera, and I get the audio from both the camera and my higher quality USB microphone. When I select the web camera and external microphone and hit record, I get two files. One called 2-n.mp4 which is an audio-only file with the audio recorded, and a second called 3-n.mp4 that is a blank video file. In addition, when I click the "Automatically import captured video..." button, nothing happens. So my questions are:

  1. Why am I getting two files - one for audio and one for video?
  2. Why is the video file blank? (FYI - the camera works fine with Skype and other applications.)
  3. Why is the file not getting added into my open project?

Thanks for any assistance.

Chuck

The Vegas products are designed to capture from Firewire, not USB. It may appear to work, but probably won't.

Thanks for the comment, although I am disappointed by it. Any suggestions for other tools to capture a web camera for importing into Vegas?

If you have a picture of that webcam on your screen you can catch it with the free app OBS and for the better Capture of Vegas you'll probably have to wait for an update because as far as I know in VPro 18 there are no problems like in the former versions.
@Former user This Vegas capture means screencapture and has nothing to do with Firewire and it looks like this

Indeed, the OP refers to the VEGAS Capture (Screen Capturing) feature in VMS 17 Platinum.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Did not mean to give incorrect information.

Yes, to be clear, I was referring to the feature shown in j-v's post. Given the clarification, any thoughts on answers to my 3 questions?

Regarding the suggestion of using screen capture - because VMS has the camera open and showing in the preview, it is not available to be used by any other app to show for screen capture.
