That's what the interactive tutorials in the software are for.
Give it a go and post back when you have specific questions.

I have watched the basic 8 step tutoriol and I still cant get my media from my dvd onto the software. I have burned home dvds. Do I have to copy them to my hard drive first or can I just stick them in and edit? I know this may seem elementary but i'm not to savy with computers.

I went to import media and copied the files and opened them so i have the media. I will re watch the tutorial and try to figure out how to edit.

As musicvid already told you, VMS 10 / 11 have LOTS of tutorials under Show Me How. They really help you get started, if you give yourself time to get into them.
BTW, they include e.g. Importing and Adding Media (v11, v10 under a bit different heading), like How to Import Video from a DVD Camcorder.
