Few quick ones on VMS16

FayFen wrote on 2/12/2019, 11:32 AM

Hi, I'm reviewing the new VMS16 trial for few hours now. correct me if I'm wrong

* No shortcuts for "save as", "render as" , why one needs to go thru menus for that?

** When re-render a project it keeps the project name and ask if to overwrite the file, why not to number it ZZZ_01 ,_02 ...

*** the WMV's profiles for 1920X1080 HD are actualy 1440X1080 even all my files are 1920 and so the project.

**** Why I can't close the first gap once I trim the head of the first event? So I select all and manualy move to 0.

Thank you

* See what the button 3rd from left on the Main Toolbar or Ctrl+S does for you re Save As (untitled.vf).

** Why not (re)name/number it yourself before pressing "Render"?

**** See what the KB shortcuts in Edit > Post-Edit Ripple options do immediately after editing (Auto Ripple off). Read also online Help (F1) article "Post-Edit Ripple".

This is in all Vegas Pro and Movie Studio versions and the "1920x1080" WMV profile means the display size. In times WMV being a common file type, full HD video usually was 1440x1080 with 1,3333 pixel aspect ratio (just like HDV). WMV is considered to be outdated now and that profile still is from these former days.

If one still needs WMV and is looking for a 1920x1080 full HD square pixel aspect ratio preset – make your own in less than a minute.

Save isn't "save as", as it will rewrite the same project and not make versions.

- Few freeware use CTRL+SHIFT+S for save as

-But I think that shortcut to "render as" is highly important

Why? because it's a computer software and it should work for me and not I for it in 2019.

Thank you, I'll have to remember that.

** Marco, indeed that what I did. I found that on certain animations, h264 mp4 makes more "noise" on the video than VC1 wmv. So on few of my projects with that animation I prefer to use wmv.

Thanks for all.

I know this automatic numbering behavior from Powerdirector, I admit it could be sometimes useful, but most of the times it fills your renderdrive with countless copies of the same renders.

The "Save" button on the Main Toolbar (and Ctrl+S) works as "Save As" when I save an untitled project (that is also what I wrote above). Otherwise you're right of course.

As for point **, adding a number or two into the Name box of the Render As window takes me a second or two. I can live with that.

And it takes only one hour for a programer to add, for all to enjoy.

What about dual monitors? as far as I tried I couldn't find how to drag/float any segment of the workspace into a second monitor. Only "the" video could be directed there.

Is it a trial limitation that I can't "float" the layout windows?

**Oh, another thing I found, no undo's on changes in the text maker, if I set color or any setting with the sliders... no undo.

***And still on the text maker, it uses "tracking" for fonts spacing but the common term is Kerning so why not to use it?

Thank you.

I doubt that it's a trial limitation but I've registered my trial so cannot check. I've no problem dragging panes, other than the timeline, onto my second monitor. How are you trying to drag them?

It's a matter of preference. I prefer it as it is. Usually when I'm doing a re-render I want to overwrite my previous one.

Strange you can't, I can.

Well, with the arrows on top left menu it works 100% of the times, but not with the keyboard. it dings when I CTRL-Z .

It's tricky, I was able for a moment but not now . I don't know where I draged. I think it's holding for a second the name of the pane but it doesn't work all the time, so maybe it's not.

Drag down on the tab ("name of the pane") to undock. Hold Ctrl to dock window (if Prefs. > Display setting re this is default).

Even Ctrl+Z works fine here to redo text properties. You may switch the focus to the timeline first.
