Haha! I'm stuck on this as well! After adding media, VMS lands you onto the storyboard-layout. I have to go to the view menu and select the default layout to be able to see the timeline and preview monitor again. I would be interested to know how to deselect the storyboard-layout as the default.
I'm guessing disabling the dashboard is the thing to do, because that was the first thing I did when I started up the software for the first time, and haven't looked back, and have not experienced anything like the issue being described.
That was it! I had dashboard open. I have my initial install of Vegas Movie Studio 17 Platinum from my original Suite purchase. Now adding media acts as expected. But how do I open media generator? I looked in the manual and they don't say.
Also, help keeps crashing Vegas. In fact this is the only way I've been able to crash Vegas; i.e., clicking help on Vegas' menu opens the applet, but as soon as I type a search-term and hit enter, I get the spinning-ring and then Windows reports that the application is not responding. This happens every time—I have never been able to successfully search Vegas' help.
@studio-4 Some users have the same issue with online Help. If you don't succeed in launching Help, the relevant file MovieStudio170.chm is here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Help Files. (For you it may be here: C:\Program Files (x86)\VEGAS\Shared Plug-Ins\Help Files.) It 's possible to create a shortcut for it.
See some earlier discussion on this issue e.g. here.
And, Choose View > Window > Media Generators to toggle the display of the Media Generators window.
VK to the rescue again! Thanks a lot! At least I'm not the only one experiencing the help bug. Thanks for the link! Doh! I can't believe I missed that—I thought I checked every menu—didn't check the "window" menu. This was the last head-scratcher for me—now I can do some editing!
So I think that was the last thing that was confusing me. I was having some trouble undocking windows (CTL + drag), but I just re-checked the option and then it started working again. I've pretty much read most of the manual, so I feel a lot more confident using the app.
