Vegas Pro 16 Help Won't Launch

stevefoobar2 wrote on 3/3/2019, 11:39 PM

Hi Everyone. I must say first that after using Vegas Movie Studio versions for many years, I'm really enjoying my new Magix Vegas Pro 16!

I'm having a very odd problem. When I first installed the software, I was able to launch the Help file and saw the usual (and very old-school) Windows Help dialog. Now when I click on the Help menu, Contents and Index or F1, absolutely nothing happens. No window or dialog box gets launched. The "What's This" (Shift F1) does seem to launch but when I click on anything, also nothing happens. Clicking on Keyboard Shortcuts also does nothing. The Interactive Tutorial does launch properly.

Does anyone have any ideas? I suppose I can uninstall and reinstall it but I hate having to do that to see if it corrects the issue.

Thanks.

It sems like something changed in your system to cause the help to fail. Any recent changes to your system? If not, then I'd uninstall and reinstall for starters, especially if you don't have a bunch of custom settings invested.

And if you don't succeed in launching Help, the relevant file vegas160.chm is here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Help Files. It 's possible to create a shortcut for it.

(Note also what resetting does.)

Thanks so much guys. Both great suggestions. vkmast, a special thanks to you. For some reason I can't quite remember, the Sony folder got deleted. Fortunately, it was still sitting in my Recyce Bin so putting it back immediately resolved the problem! Thanks again!

@vkmast

Sony?

I have: C:\Program Files (x86)\VEGAS\Shared Plug-Ins\Help Files

@john-brown believe it or not

Wow, must be a legacy thing. I started with 14, so no Sony.

Probably, good to know.

@vkmast I don't have help under Sony either. When I made a clean install of Windows 10, I think I installed Vegas Pro 16 first then sometime after that installed 15, 13, 14 trial, MS 13 and 16. All the help files for those versions are in the Vegas folder in Program Files (x86). I have no folder Sony in the Program Files (x86)!

@Eagle Six just to confirm "the legacy thing" thing (!), would your #13 versions be Magix-branded builds (VP later than 453 and VMSP later than 955)?

Eagle Six wrote on 3/5/2019, 11:31 AM

@vkmast negative, both the Vegas and Movie Studio are the Sony branded.

On my two current computers, all under Sony. May be due to having installed SCS versions first. Intending to keep them for now, for obvious reasons. And as said, good to know that this may be different.

Eagle Six wrote on 3/5/2019, 4:51 PM

@vkmast I think that may be the case, you installed Sony versions first, which would have been my case in Windows 7 probably, before I did the clean install of W10 and installed Magix first. It is strange I think that the only place I have a vegas130.chm file is C:\Program Files (x86)\VEGAS\Shared Plug-ins\Help Files\. How does the Sony Vegas Pro 13 know to put the vegas130.chm file in a folder starting with VEGAS, which was a Magix branding folder?!?!?

Probably similar to why my Magix Vegas .chm files are in a Sony folder?

Eagle Six wrote on 3/5/2019, 5:29 PM

OK then, I'm going to refer to this as a Similar Wizard!! The programs know what to do, even though I don't know what they are doing, but in doing so, it apeers that by doing this, everything else is doing whatever they do to make things do right!!!! There.....see.....I figured it out!?!?!?

Actually there are few Sony folders still used if one started with a Sony version of MS. For example until VMS16 your customised Render Templates were in Users\Appdata\Roaming\Sony\Render Templates. Mine still are but any new ones created with VMS16 go in ...Vegas\Render Templates. Obviously VMS16 reads both folders as all appear okay. I only have VMS15 and 16 installed now but I'm wary of deleting any Sony folders just in case.

Do yourself a favour and download a pdf version of the manual, I found sometimes using the built-in help function can crash and thus take down VP with it..
