Home Studio Platinum 10 - video clip freezes

Hi folks

I'm new to the forum so please excuse me if this has been posted before.

I have used Home Studio Platinum 10 for about 18 months for university machinima projects without any problems and getting great results. It has been important when editing machinima to sync audio to the video, these being recorded separately.

I have now upgraded my computer to one using Windows 7. After fixing a problem in which the program did not recognise the video in AVI files, only the audio, by installing the K-Lite Codec Pack. Now at least I can see the video in the Project Media box and in the timeline.

However, while the audio plays fine the video frequently freezes, so it skips clips until it catches up for a bit and then freezes again. It often freezes altogether and says it is not responding, before clearing itself. It is now useless for the fine sync work I need to do. Can anyone suggest what I might do - I have 8 GB of RAM so I would find it odd if it is shortage of memory (but I am not particularly tech-savy (my processor is a Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz and it is running Windows 7 64).

Thanks!

What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?

Your computer is probably not powerful enough to edit high-def video -- which could explain why there's a lag between your video and audio playback. Setting your Preview monitor's quality to the lowest possible quality might help. But, still, if you're working with video from a high-def camcorder -- especially AVCHD or, worse, video from a smartphone or other non-camcorder source -- you're way underpowered.

Are you serious Steve? I would have said that an Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz with 8GB of RAM was plenty powerful enough. Could the problem be the K-Lite CODEC pack. It has often been said on this forum that these packs are a bad idea and that it is much better to install individual CODECs as needed.

Oops. Sorry! I should have had a second cup of coffee. I thought I saw an i3 processor listed. You very much have more than enough power! And that K-Lite Codec Pack shouldn't have any negative effect.

What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?

Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 was still a 32-bit application.

And I'd follow the advice to just install a specific codec for a specific file type.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm not inputting ffrom a camcorder. Instead it is video of a 3D world recorded using FRAPS.

It sounds to me like it is the change to 64 bit that may be doing it. If I upgraded to Movie Studio 12 will it still read and edit my Movie Studio 10 projects?

Thank you all for your help.
