How do I remove the black box around my video?

George-Burnash wrote on 1/26/2021, 10:10 AM

I'm using Movie Studio 17 Platinum and have no idea why it is doing this.

I'm importing in a video at 1920x1080 My output is exactly the same, matching the video

For some reason there is a large black box all the way around the video- top, bottom and both sides, shrinking the actual video picture by a lot. Cropping/ zooming/ etc does nothing to change the output size or remove the boxes. Neither does trying to change the resolution of the output video or the input video. For some reason the program insists on importing my videos and locking them into a box.

doesn't matter what my source of the video is either- whether from my video camera, phone or other recording device. It's doing this to all of my imported videos.

Hoping that once I can get past this thing it might fix why it's also blackscreening/ blinking my videos, but I have a feeling that's another issue. Just about ready to dump this "upgrade" and go back to working in 14

Look one time really good that you did not put your sources on the Picture-in-Picture track?
You have to put your normal sourcefiles on a common videotrack

Without knowing more info about your issue (like media info and screenshots) I'd suggest resetting Vegas to default settings by holding CTRL + SHIFT and double clicking the shortcut. Try again after that.

Or remove/mute the PIP FX that is applied to the PIP track. I wish Vegas didn't add it as it causes frequent problems. You are not the first to be tricked by it and unlikely to be the last.

Unfortunately the default settings will include the problematic PIP track!

As @EricLNZ suggests you can remove(delete) the "problematic" PiP track or all tracks and start with a clean timeline. The tracks are created when you add files.

You can also delete tracks that you don't want and then "save as" to make that your "default project". Create a shortcut for that on the desktop. Start with that and remember to then save your new project with a different name so you don't lose your default.

Thanks everyone for trying to help.

It's not the picture in picture track. I removed that just to make sure it's not the problem. It's very random. I've tried working with a number of different videos- all shot on the same dslr- and about 1 in 12 seems to do this. Not a clue why. Even with the dragging and dropping into the same work flow. There really seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. I had one do it, where I removed it from the project, deleted the sfk file, then added it back to the project and it didn't have the black box that it had earlier in the same project.

I'm still also completely mystified as to why after I make a few edits my video will go black, with an occasional "flash" of the video while the audio works fine. Haven't had that issue in 14 or 12, and hadn't found much with others that have had something similar.

Frustrating as it's a program I really like, but this is just odd.

@George-Burnash
To give more help, we need a lot more information about the program (buildnumber), the hardware you installed the program on, the exact projectproperties that were used and the MediaInfo of the sourcefiles that got wrong. Start here to give that information on parts B & C: : https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/
