How To Burn To DVD

Hi. I'm trying to burn my video to a DVD so it can be played on a regular DVD player. I can get it to play on a newer Blu-ray player, but older Blu-ray players and DVD players say the file isn't supported. So, how can I get this thing onto a DVD and actually have it work correctly? (Also, just to clarify, Movie Studio 14 does NOT come with DVD Architect, correct?) Thanks.

What are you using to author the DVD?

I was just hitting "Send To" and selecting the BDROM drive. I had saved it once as an MP4 which didn't work, once as a Windows Movie File, which didn't work, and tried as an MPEG-2, and I got video only when played through the computer, and audio only when played through an older Blu-ray. At this point, I've completely confused myself.

Sounds like you are just copying the file to a disk. You have to author it using either a program like DVD Architect or as Cornico pointed out, some versions of Movie Studio.

As far as the "Send To" option, I was literally just right-clicking on the video icon wherever it was saved, and picking "Send To" from the window that popped up. (Yeah, that's dumb, but at that point I was grasping at straws...)

Correct, to make a DVD you have to do

1. Make Movie/Save it to my harddrive >>>>>>Advanced Options>>>>> Mainconcept Mpeg2/one of the four program streams

2. The Mpeg2 file you made, you have to burn with burningsoftware.
Maybe you can use the software that came with your burner as Nero or the free IMGBurn.

If you are only creating MPEG files from Movie Studio, you can't just use burning software. You have to author it first. I do not use Movie Studio so I don't know if it creates DVD authored files or only the MPEG and audio files.

If the options highlighted in the screenshots of Cornico's 2nd post here are available in the basic MVMS 14, you could try a free authoring application like the one mentioned in the 2nd link in my post above. The basic version does not have customizable render templates though AFAIK.

If you do not use authoring software, it is not a DVD standard disk. It is a data disk with an MPEG file. Some players may play it, but as he has found out, players that adhere to a DVD standard will not.

DVD Architect is authoring software, as well as Adobe Encore. ImgBurn is disk burning software. It can burn a Compliant DVD from a folder created by authoring software, but it is not a DVD authoring program. The definition of authoring software is software that creates a Compliant DVD. If you are only burning an MPEG file to a disk using ImgBurn it is not a DVD video compliant disk. In the US, most DVD players in the past would not play a disk that was not DVD video compliant. But many imported players would play anything included a non-compliant disk because it reads it as a Data disk.

Ok, so I went this route and used Windows DVD Maker of all things, and it worked. The quality isn't the best, but it'll work for this purpose. So, thanks everyone! (This thing was driving me crazy.)
