Importing video from a DVD with V19

SWS wrote on 4/1/2024, 10:32 AM

Thankfully I have SONY Vegas 13 and Vegas 14 as well. They both have the Import "DVD Camcorder Disc" capability. As I have an old DVD I need to capture. I noticed though on Vegas 19 that feature doesn't seem to be available. Is there a better way to capture a DVD with Vegas since that option, although referenced in the manual as being available, doesn't seem to exist?

After a bit of playing around maybe dragging and dropping the VOB into the Vegas 19 timeline might work?

DVD importing support has been deprecated in VEGAS Pro 19. However, you can still access this feature by opening up the preferences dialog (Options/Preferences), select the "Deprecated Features" tab, and then check the "Enable Import DVD Camcorder Disc" option. This will then allow this import option again.

Do beware that this is not a supported feature anymore and the reason it is turned off by default is that is may cause some conflicts modern systems, so if VEGAS becomes unstable, you would be wise to try to deactivate this option again.

Thanks Derek, sounds great! And I was able to drag the .VOB file onto the timeline and it appears to work just fine with that method.

This is the "Gary James Method" and has worked for many years.

Vegas allows you to open up a DVD .IFO file. This imports the entire .VOB chain for both video and audio tracks.
Copy the contents of the DVD over to your hard drive first, then open up the .IFO file from the hard drive copy.
Click File / Open, then navigate to your VIDEO_TS sub directory and enter *.IFO in the File name input field. For a regular DVD you will see a VIDEO_TS.IFO, and a VTS_01_0.IFO. Select the VTS_01_0.IFO file and click on Open.
The advantage of using the .IFO file open method over the DVD Import method is that it's faster, and when you are all done, chapter marks in the original DVD are included in the video stream as media markers.

@rs170a Long time no see, nice to know you're still following the forum.

@rs170a Good to see you Mike!

The problem I've had with the VTS_01_0.IFO import method with Vegas Pro 14 and newer, is that Dolby AC3 audio tracks won't import.

For that purpose, I keep Vegas 8.0c and DVDA 5 installed, my remaining discs from that era still open with audio.

@vkmast, I'm still using version 12 for my personal (long retired) life but I poke my head in once in a while.to see what's going on and if I can help in any small way - such as this one.

@mark-y, as I said above, I'm still using version 12 at home so I wasn't ware of that issue. Thanks for pointing it our!!

12 was a good version, a little weak on high profile avc support.

I did try the "Gary James Method" Mike in Vegas 19 and all I got was the video but no audio when I opened the VTS_01_0.IFO file. If I drag the VTS_01_1.VOB I do get video & audio, it's not everything but it's enough. I'm sure it would work as you say in SONY Vegas 13 though. I'll try that method later.

As mark-y said earlier, this method stopped being able to import AC-3 files (what are on a DVD) after Vegas 14. Your method will result in an audio gap between VOB files if you have more than 1 on your timeline. If you only have the one file, no worries. It's more than one file that will give you grief 😄

I've tried to import the audio by other means, and it still doesn't sync right.
