Launch in Different Version of Movie Studio? Association?

I now have MS 14 and MS 16. I know 'some' about project files created in 16 not being able to open in 14, but I have a related problem that I could not find in the forum.

I created a project in 16. After closing it and if I double click on the project file it self, it tries to open in ver 14 (upon which I get an expected error that project files created in newer versions cannot open in earlier versions). I want double-clicked project files to always open in 16 (not 14 - for obvious reasons). How do I get this to happen? Seems like a simple thing, but 'dang' I don't know how 🤓.

Thank you, thank you to the fine contributors who answer this!

Dave

It's a Windows thing. So you need to tell Windows which version it should use. There are several ways of doing this. Yell if you need help. It doesn't help that MS14,15 and 16 all have the same icon!!!! Personally I find it easier to open MS and then open the project from there.

Again, Thank You EricLNZ. Yes, I open MS first... but I am used to launching programs from their files. Guess I'm 'yelling'... I know Windows kinda well but I don't know how to do (file associations??) through it. Through other programs, yes but not Windows. Maybe I should uninstall MS 14? I'd rather not, just to have it in case... Sure looks like MS does not have a feature that does this.

Dave

PS: Since you are so knowledgeable, is there any MS 14 feature I 'simply must' activate using the 'internal' tab in Options/Preferences? Meaning..., is there some very common feature that many people miss when leaving MS 14? A simple "No" will suffice. I figure if I'm not missing anything..., that there isn't.

Taking your second question first. I've activated Mainconcept legacy for rendering as the new Magix Mainconcept gives problems with generated media. With stabiliser I find the old version more effective, although the developers are working on improving the new Video Stabilizer. I also use the Legacy Titler more than Titles and text. It displays all my windows fonts whereas some don't appear in Titles & Text.

File Association - Probably the easiest way is to right click on a vf file and tell it which version of VMS you wish to use but as the icons are identical it's guesswork. Then hopefully you may have an option to tick "always use this". If this doesn't work there are longer options and threads with instructions. I'll have a search.

File Associations - useful link from another thead - https://www.thewindowsclub.com/change-file-associations-windows

Thank you once again. Yes, I can right click and select my 'second' identical icon and open a vf in 16 but if I merely double click it, it always opens in 14 (or tries to but fails if it was created in 16). Ver 14 and 16 have the same icon AND the same project file extension (.vf). Oh well, its not worth any more effort. I just won't double click.

I tried Windows file associations... but there is only ".vf" in there as default for Ver. 14 (not 16). I'm guessing the solution, if I am stuck on double clicking, is to uninstall ver. 14 so it isn't there to open everything double clicked. End of story? No double clicking.

And, to end this, right clicking and selecting the second identical icon (16) has no "always use this". Thank You.

Regarding Windows file type associations, I posted instructions on how to set which version of Vegas you want as your default program, in a reply on my own forum at Movie Studio Zen.

When trying to work out which version of Vegas to use, you will have to use some trial and error. This is what it looks like when you have many different versions on the same computer.

+1. If only they'd go back to using different icons...

+1. If only they'd go back to using different icons...

+2. It's ridiculous really. Surely it cannot be hard to give each version something different!

There are more icons in the exe file I'm using the " gray film" for my VMS High load batch.

@FayFen actually this has been discussed a few times before, e.g.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/sony-vegas-icons--115614/

I agree with what @EricLNZ wrote above and wait for the real solution from Magix Vegas.

@FayFen Yes I'm aware of the extras although some look like standard MS icons, not VMS. None of the alternatives are very inspiring anyway.

A simple number on the icon would help. I've solved the problem by having a clean out and removing old versions so I only have VMS Plat16 on board now.
