Magix Spam

Jep wrote on 1/8/2017, 1:45 AM

First - sorry if this is in the wrong section but I didn't know where else to put it.

For a while now every time I open Vegas Pro 13 I get spammed by Magix for one of their products. I know this is a minor problem but it is very irritating indeed. I think Magix have a nerve gratuitously spamming their customers. If anything it will ensure I never buy another of their products in future. Is there any way I can stop these spam popups every time I open Vegas?

TIA

Let us know if it works by unticking the below checkbox in Options>Preferences menu

1)
I think a person buying an airplane is expected to be learned to operate it. Instead of taking off and blaming constructors mid air: "your plane behaves bad!"; and "if it doesn't fly where I want it to I won't buy a thing from you ever!" *

2)
Oh, you're lucky! You're lucky, and you don't understand how much you are! I have never received a single message from Magix via "net notify" yet, and I feel sad about it, I feel abandoned and lonely!!!
(Not that dramatic, really.)

Thanks for that - I'll give it a go. 😉

I didn't buy an airplane. Perhaps you're in the wrong forum. Suggest you Google "airplane", I'm sure you'll be happy with what you find.

Oh!!! by the way - how do you turn off the gray interface?

Thanks ! I was having an annoying advertisement when the software starts shilling Vegas 14. This seems to have taken care of it.

In my MS it worked well. I don't think its spam, but perhaps the default should be off with a mention of it in the notes for each release. Many folks don't follow forums and it is a good way to keep current if you don't IMHO. The title of this threads sounds like it was written for DPreview:)

Thanks for the heads up about the Net Notify choice in preferences. However, I haven't found the emails I've received from Magix to be annoying. I like knowing what the developers of my favorite video editing software are up to. Re: the advice about knowing how to operate your airplane, good idea. (I know you were serious, right?) I wonder how many on this forum are pilots. Me, CMEL-Instruments.

Interesting that there are some that are actually receiving emailed newsletters re MAGIX VEGAS. I am under the impression that they are now pushing these Net Notify offers as they have not yet seemed to find a way to reach all Magix Vegas users, even if the users have done the "Sign up now and never miss our current offers and information about VEGAS Creative Software."

Oh!!! by the way - how do you turn off the gray interface?

Toggle "Use Vegas colour scheme" in Options / Prefs. / Display. (In Sony Vegas at least)

The first thing I do when I install any new product is check to see if there is something like net notify that needs switching off. Having said this I'm more concerned about programs that try to or need to phone home. I'm still waiting to hear back from MAGIX support about why the program requires activation after every update and whether it needs to phone home periodically to keep working. I wrote to them on December 3rd and am going to prod them again to give a full answer.

Please share any reply you receive. Currently the official page says:

"...Please note that the program requires an Internet connection at least once a month to validate the license. This validation runs in the background when you are connected to the Internet.
If the license cannot be validated because a connection to the license server cannot be established, the program will notify you. You can then continue to use the software without an Internet connection for a few more days. Of course, it is otherwise still possible to use the software offline...
"

But this reply from Magix staff says:

"...The previous generation of MAGIX applications required online verification monthly, however, the current MAGIX apps do not require the user to be online after installation. The license is tied to your account and it is still verified. Online activation is required, however the machine does not need to be online after activation."

My feeling is that the information on the official page is probably out of date with reference to Vegas programs.

I did get an answer to my request on December 21 from ***. He wrote:

Typically activation is required once per installation.  If a hardware
configuration or OS config were to change this might change the unique machine
ID assigned and trigger another activation request.

But as you wrote that contradicts the official information and also my own experience. No hardware changes but every new build requires activation. I hope your feeling is right. I'll post back if I learn anything new.

I guess "installation" in Support's message includes installation of an update (new build).

I got another reply (dated January 19th). This claims that the requirement to be connected to the Internet at least once a month is for P2 licenses and not P3 which Vegas is using. I've written back asking for the official page to be changed. It would be good if more people would chase Magix up about this. A product that requires constant Internet Verification is unacceptable. Until the Official Information is changed I remain to be convinced.

Marco. wrote on 1/18/2017, 5:46 PM

I also find such information is important especially for pro usage. Though I wouldn't call the need of internet verification once per update and once per month for the usage of certain codecs "constant".

Kit-As-Was wrote on 1/18/2017, 9:15 PM

What would you call it then?

Does the M in your green hexagon indicate that you work for Magix? If so then perhaps you can confirm how the Vegas P3 activation works. If it does not require connection to the internet beyond installation then the License Verification information needs changing. If it does require regular verification to continue working then that means Magix support has lied to me. It also means that Vegas 14 was sold under false pretenses. I bought Vegas 14 based on the assurance given by MAGIX__Eric D. I consider software that requires constant verification to be a form of ransom-ware. I think it is harmful to society in general and users in particular. I want no part of it. And if this comes across as a bit strong bear in mind that I've been trying to get a straight answer for several months. Cheers!

I can’t be sure of all of them, but the way I understand it, people with the M in the icons are moderators (or hosts, as Magix seems to call them) in the forum. At least two of them state explicitly in their signatures that they do not work for Magix.
