Marker Tool not working in Studio 12 - 64bit

Jillian wrote on 12/4/2012, 3:27 PM
I am editing AVCHD 60i video on a Win 7/64 bit machine.

I have used markers several times and they render properly and work as chapter points in DVDA.

Today, for the first time, I clicked on the Marker Tool (Top right corner of timeline) and nothing happened. In Vegas 11 I used to get a menu listing the installed markers. If you clicked on one in the menu items, the timeline jumped the the now highlighted marker. According to the help files, this is still suppose to happen.

Is the Marker Tool working for anyone using Studio 12? Is there a switch somewhere to turn it on or off?

In fact, I just tried and there does not seem to be any way to "jump" from one marker to another that is actually working in my instillation of Studio 12.

I've purchased the VASST Marker Tool. My next step will be to install it and see if that works.

In the meantime, any suggestions would be appreciated.

My marker tool 'icon' doesn't show any menu or such in either Version 11 nor 12. It works exactly as described in the built in help information for both versions:

You need to have one or more markers already in your project.

"Click the Marker Tool button in the top-right corner of the timeline."

Jillian,
I find the same behaviour as Doc here. No menu in older versions either, maybe you had a 3rd party plug-in? VPro has 'Edit Details' option that shows Markers too, but that's different.
Pay attention to this last line
The marker tool is inactive when you change focus to another portion of the Movie Studio window.
and Each marker (up to 99) is assigned a number. Pressing this number on the keyboard moves the cursor to the corresponding marker.

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

Doc.

I've found one of my problems. In version 11 I can use my number pad keys or the number keys at the top of the keyboard to jump to the appropriate marker. However, in version 12 only the numbers at the top of the keyboard work. I was trying to use the keypad numbers, and they do nothing. So, now at least I can jump from one marker to another, which covers 99% of what I want to do.

As far as the arrow keys and key combinations... none of them work at this point. I'm beginning to think the 64 bit version of my keyboard software may have assigned different meanings to some of my keys and combinations. When I upgraded from win 7 32 bit to 64 bit windows could not find the proper software for my Microsoft keyboard and mouse and I had to switch to 3rd party drivers. I won't say anything about Microsoft operating systems not being able to recognize Microsoft hardware, but we all know how that works!

VK,

I was confused about the menu. I was thinking about the marker menu that pops up in Avid Studio. Since I've switched to Win 7 - 64bit, Avid has been working very well and I now use it occasionally when I want to use complex effects, which it excels at, even though it is way too complex to keep the timeline synchronized for everyday editing. Also, as mentioned in another post, Avid will open a number of files that choke Sony, so occasionally I use it to trans-code files.

Again, thanks for the response.

Jillian,
this is from online Help
Keyboard shortcuts
The same text is in MSP 11 and 12 Help. Works that way too for me in both.

Hate to be the odd one here, but I believe if you have the 'NUM LOCK' key on, the short cuts from the number pad won't work. On mine, anyway. Also, once it is off, I just hold Ctrl and hit the right or left arrow key to get it to jump from marker to marker like I thought you wanted. Hope that helps. Cin

I understood the original problem or question was connected with specifically the 'icon' (which I wonder why it's even there). But, in Version 11 or 12, I was never able to use the numeric keypad on the extended keyboards for moving between markers. Only the numbers on the main keyboard. This was also confirmed to me from Sony early on.

Of course there are ways to reassign keyboard keys - but assuming all is a standard set-up, I am surprised you can use the 'numbers pad' to move between markers/regions.

I am affirming, using any number key on the numeric keypad with NumLock activated, or 'on', has no affect on cursor movement in association with moving between marker or regions. Using the numeric keypad with NumLock 'off' will cause large movements of the cursor - e.g. 6 will move the cursor to the right by a time increment proportional to how zoomed into the timeline you are; but has no affect on moving between markers/regions.

This is confirmed in the 'Online Help' guide regarding keyboard shortcuts:

"Move cursor to corresponding marker or select corresponding region - 0-9 keys ("

This is valid for my latest versions of:
Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0
Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0
Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0
Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.0
Movie Studio Platinum 12.0

I won't speak to Vegas Pro versions here.

When in the 'edge trimming' mode, the number pad keys are used (sometimes with the Ctrl or Alt keys) to trim, compress or slide parts of media. There is also the possibility to use the numeric keypad to 'nudge' the cursor in various ways while trimming.

[Note: One interesting use of the numeric keypad, is the zero, 0, key will select a very short piece of the project and play it at the cursor location. Handy.]

I can only conclude, if the cursor moves between markers/regions using the numeric keypad, there has been some remapping of the keyboard, or an auxiliary editing device is attached, the application is corrupted or we are confusing terms here.

Hi Doc, just for a check, click in the timeline, make sure 'num lock' is off, hold down 'ctrl' and use your right and left arrows to see if you can't jump from marker to marker? Let us know. Cin

Cin,
here, holding down ctrl the right and left arrows jump from marker to marker with num lock on or off.

Thanks a lot fellows!

Yes, holding Ctrl and the right and left arrows jumps to the next marker or to the end or beginning of the timeline if there are no more markers

So, I'm now up and running with marker navigation. I can use Ctrl-(arrows) or the corresponding number key (not on Keypad) to jump to markers, which is what I was trying to figure out to begin with. I've also installed the VASST Marker tool and it gives pretty much full control of markers.

I still do not have a clue what the Marker Tool in Studio does. Absolutely nothing happens when I click it, but at this point I really don't need it.

Thanks again for all who responded.

Inserting markers is one of the best tools I ever used in Movie Studio.

'Thanks a lot fellows!'
OK............ ;)
Thanks VK for checking for me. Mine still doesn't work with num lock on, but maybe that's a laptop thing. That's all I have worked on for the past 10 or 12 years, and that's they way it's always been for me, but no big deal. I think we all learned a little something. :) Cin
