Marker Tool- what does it do

Former user wrote on 12/20/2018, 3:41 PM

In trying to search out some answers about the Marker question on the forum, I again tried to figure out what the Marker Tool on the timeline does. I click it and nothing happens, it does not allow me to navigate the Markers as stated in the Help File. Does anyone know what it is supposed to do and if it works or not?

I understand two reasons for markers:

1.) Notes to self along the timeline

2.) Delineate DVD and/or Blu-ray chapters

Selecting the Marker tool should insert a marker onto the timeline. The [m] key is a short-cut.

This answer seems way too easy and that makes me feel like I might not fully understand your question!

Note to self (everyone else please look away -- the note that follows is a reminder for mine eyes only): Figure out a clever, kick-booty signature that suggests I'm completely aware of how to properly and exhaustively party on and that I, in fact, engage in said act on a frequent and spontaneous basis. All joking aside, listing my computer's properties is a futile endeavor. I edit multimedia in a local television station newsroom that has Vegas Pro installed on several machines with widely varied specs. We began editing non-linearly with Pinnacle Studio Version 8. That didn't last long before we upgraded to Vegas Video Version 4, then to Vegas Pro 10.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/marker-tool-not-working-in-studio-12-64bit--92129/#ca550553 and the comment below that. Still does that at least using left/right buttons in VP 16 b 352.

Turd, I am speaking about the Icon on the upper right of the timeline that is a Marker Tool. Does not seem to do anything. I use markers all of the time, but supposedly this tool allows some manipulating of the markers, but as VKmast pointed out, it apparently does not function in Version 12 (which is where I am)

VKmast, Yes, I am using Version 12 so maybe that is the issue. I just don't remember it ever doing anything.

Huh!

In all my years using every Vegas version since SF V3 I've either never noticed that icon is there or I've forgotten I've noticed it! Most likely the latter ; )

Seems it 's changed somewhat since the thread I linked the comments from. From VP 16 b352 online Help

Former user wrote on 12/20/2018, 4:28 PM

That is the same thing that V12 says in Help file, but it doesn't do anything.

vkmast wrote on 12/20/2018, 4:45 PM

@Former user you're right about the Help file. A part of my quote referred to above was from the "Insert markers" Help item. Did you press the Marker Tool button and right after that one of the markers and then left/right buttons?

Btw, did you "spring for that HB deal"?

Marco. wrote on 12/20/2018, 5:27 PM

While some of the Marker commands do work without having the Marker Tool enabled (just like selecting several or all marker or moving selected markers), some other only work with the Marker Tool enabled, just like jumping from marker to marker with cursor left/right or expanding the marker selection with Shift+Cursor left/right.

What seems to be a bug to me is that there is no indication when the tool is enabled and when it is disabled.

Former user wrote on 12/20/2018, 5:38 PM

No, I decided against the HB deal until I can upgrade my computer but since I got a new Guitar, that is delayed as well. I clicked the tool and did the things the help tool mentions and nothing seemed to do anything. I think it is a bug in V12.

Odd, it does work for me in VP 12 b 770 on my desktop and laptop.

Former user wrote on 12/20/2018, 7:27 PM

That is the build I am using. What does it allow you to do? I click on it and it changes size (slightly) but it does not allow the arrow keys to navigate to markers or any of the other help comments.

vkmast wrote on 12/20/2018, 7:46 PM

Besides what I've mentioned about pressing MT etc. earlier, see also Marco.'s comment. Note that focus must not "change to another portion of the Vegas Pro window".

I still don't get anything. I know it is not a major deal, but if you could post a video showing it working, I would appreciate it. Not a big deal though so I understand if you can't.

From the "Marker Tool" Help, these 3 things work anyway without requiring the marker tool:

  • Press Shift while clicking two marker tags to select all markers between the two tags.
  • Press Ctrl while clicking marker tags to select or deselect individual markers.
  • Dragging any selected marker will move all selected markers in the active bar as a group.

These 3 things require a functioning marker tool:

  • Press the Left Arrow/Right Arrow keys to move to the previous/next marker in the active bar (marker/region bar, CD layout bar, or command bar).
  • Press Shift+Left Arrow/Right Arrow keys to extend the selection to the previous/next marker.
  • Pressing Delete will remove all selected markers in the active bar.

Just now I got it briefly working as advertised in VP10, although the appearance of the icon didn't change if it's selected. However now it's stopped working again, and doesn't work for me in any version since.

I just realised it doesn't work if there are no tracks on the timeline. With a track on the timeline it works in all versions.

But really the icon should change when it's selected.

And the Help file should distinguish between Marker functions that require the Marker Tool and functions that don't.

Agreed, as Marco. said earlier, "it seems to be a bug."

vkmast, thanks very much. I did get it to work after watching your video, although I don't see it as being that useful, except maybe the delete function.. I can type in the numbers for each marker quicker. And yes, I do believe the ICON should be more obvious when it is active. Thanks for everybody's input.
