Motion Blur effect = extremely long render

StardustCreations wrote on 12/18/2016, 12:45 PM

Greetings fellow editors,

I just posted another issue I've been having, but I felt I really wanted to ask about this too because this is, like my other issue, caused by trying out a new effect I don't normally use.

So, I added some motion blur (00:00:00:04 amount) to my video using the Video bus. I was pretty happy with it, so I tried to render my finished video, only to see a signifigant increase in render time since adding the motion blur. Without the effect, my video would take an approximate 15 minutes to render...With the motion blur, the numbers just kept climbing and climbing before estimating over 50 minutes! Even though my video is only 3 minutes long.

I've already done my best with researching how to have the best render settings and fastest render times, so I'm just not really sure what to do about this, if anything can be done. But I was hoping that someone might be able to at least explain why adding this simple effect would lag my render time so much.

My program is Vegas Pro 13 (build 290) and my OS is Windows 10, but I can provide more info if needed.

Thank you!

Of course you did. Motion blur relies on some extreme math, which takes a lot of time.

Should updating help with the rendering time, then?

Oh, I see. Well, I can be good with that I guess. I wanted to see if anyone would tell me it's just what's to be expected.

I just updated Vegas, but I didn't follow the exact path you gave me, so I now have build 545.

You normally only want to motion blur moving text and graphics, so make sure it is switched  off on your video tracks.

Well, it may seem strange to some people, as motion blur can be an unwanted effect in most cases...But I actually really like how it looks on the entire video, including clips. It gives a nice ethereal effect that fits nicely with what I'm creating.

This is someone else's video that is similar to the kind that I make, and they include motion blur in the whole video. You can see how it makes everything appear sort of smooth, and gives an interesting look:

Fair enough.  An aesthetic choice is a perfectly good reason.   But, as mentioned it is render "heavy."  The clip you showed has a pretty high-end motion graphics look. Are you getting similar results out of Vegas?

Blur of any kind is computationally intensive, if you want it, use it, but be prepared for much longer render times.

Okay, I will just keep that in mind then.

I'm not quite sure I understand your question...? But I would say yes, I do get similar results. I use clips from the same show used in the video, with I believe the same quality, frame rate, etc.

Also, in case you haven't seen it yet, I replied to your questions on my other forum post about Soft Contrast and included more info. :)
