Movie Studio 16 Platinum - a 1280x720 render plays very small

Editing a new project in Movie Studio 16 recently after a year not using it, with a 1280x720 mp4 source vid. When I render in 1280x720, they play very small, against a full screen of black, both in Movie Studio's preview window and on VLC. Their properties say 1280x720, but on playing them, they are small and surrounded by black. The source video plays full-screen in the preview window. In the past, any 1280x720 renders always played full-screen in both preview window and in VLC. What's going on? Thank you.

My OS (then and now): Windows 7 Pro 64 (Intel i7 Sony Vaio, 12GB RAM)

You have probably used the PIP track?

Former user wrote on 2/5/2022, 4:02 PM

@EricLNZย PIP track?

@Cal-Grant can you share a full screen pic of render & project settings pls, & maybe a pic of how it shows in VLC,

Windows has a tool called Snipping tool. click the Start button on the desktop - Windows Accessories - Snipping Tool, choose Window Snip to capture the full screen, save then post on here using the arrow button next to the smiley at the top of a new comment

@Cal-Grant Move your video clips to another track or mute/remove the Picture In Picture (PIP) FX from the track FX.

@Former user It's a trap many fall into. The PIP track is by default placed there to help? users. Instead it can cause confusion for the casual user.

Former user wrote on 2/5/2022, 4:17 PM

@EricLNZย Ah thanks, that must be a Movie Studio thing, yeah i can see how that can be confusing, ๐Ÿ˜’

EricLNZ wrote on 2/5/2022, 4:25 PM

@Former user Yes, it's a Movie Studio feature.

vkmast wrote on 2/5/2022, 5:04 PM

And it was only in VMS Platinum versions 15, 16 and 17.

Cal-Grant wrote on 2/5/2022, 6:12 PM

Folks,

EricLNZ was correct. I KNEW it had to be something 'simple'. I found that the main video track (which was on the primary 'video' track) had the PIP turned ON. I removed it from the track and it is working normally again. I ran off a quick 1-second render (at 1280x720) and it runs as I wanted/expected it to run. VLC plays it back full-screen, and if I drop it into the session, the preview screen plays it full-screen as well.

I've been using Movie Studio since version 9 (2009?) and have been upgrading and buying the newest versions up until 16. I mainly use it to add subtitles to videos for my primary audience here in Italy. I have never had this problem before. I guess I was just lucky the one or two previous times I used 16, and had placed my main working video on another track.

Why they made PIP a default setting is beyond my comprehension! I had gone through all the preferences screens, looking for an odd setting, but never checked the video effects because I'm not using any. Of course, in reality, unknown to me, I actually WAS using one (the PIP).

I'm working on a Windows 7 system, so I stopped updating the editor after version 16, because I never even use 5% of what this program is capable of doing.

Thank you ALL for all of your responses. This board is just incredible. If there is anything I can add to help others, I'll contribute, but for now, I'm just pleased and amazed at all the spot-on responses. Again, thank you ALL for your assistance.

@Cal-Grantย Good, glad you got it sorted out ๐Ÿ‘ yeah seems odd that they would put that PIP in there, i presume PIP is an effect that can be added later if wanted from an fx's folder? ๐Ÿฅด๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

EricLNZ wrote on 2/6/2022, 3:20 AM

@Former user Presumably the PIP FX is also available in Vegas Pro. It's very useful and avoids having to use Track Motion to achieve what it does.

Cal-Grant wrote on 2/6/2022, 3:39 AM

Gid,

Yes, the PIP is available in the video fx dialogue.

Former user wrote on 2/6/2022, 10:50 AM

@EricLNZย Yes thanks, I've been editing for 18yrs, these are to fx's on mine ๐Ÿ‘ i don't use Movie studio so didn't know if it was in that program's effects ๐Ÿ˜‰

EricLNZ wrote on 2/6/2022, 4:50 PM

@Former user It's a Vegas FX that comes (came) with VP and VMS and from what I can make out from the small text in your screengrab you don't have any Vegas effects showing?

You have a lot. Why so many? FX collections can grow on you rather like fonts!

Former user wrote on 2/6/2022, 5:19 PM

@EricLNZย It's dead centre, All the Vegas effects are showing in this picture, I know exactly what PiP is, i learnt about that 18yrs ago & I repeat I don't have VMS so I didn't know it was added auto to the tracks & if it was available in the fx folder/tab,

I have so many because i have the full Boris Suite, some are NewBlue that collected over the yrs but I shared that pic to show that PiP is such a very small simple fx compared to some I have, I'm not sure why you're talking to me like a complete newbie,,

EricLNZ wrote on 2/6/2022, 7:59 PM

Not intended. Your image didn't appear to be showing any VEGAS FX. It was hard to see even on my 24 inch monitor and with my PC specs! I now see why. In my VMS list of FX, Vegas FX are listed as "VEGAS Picture In Picture" etc. In your Pro version the word "VEGAS" is omitted.

I'm a "KISS" person. If I had your fantastic number of FX I probably wouldn't see the wood for the trees. Reminds me - it's probably time to purge my Fonts. I only use around two percent of them!

Former user wrote on 2/6/2022, 9:22 PM

@EricLNZย I have a 34" screen so prob easier to see ๐Ÿ‘

Since 2004 i've had MEP Premium, i know that program pretty much inside & out, but a few yrs ago i wanted more control over the features/fx's, so i upgraded to Vegas Pro, the fx's have a bit more control in Vegas but are very similar to MEP so the transition wasn't hard, but.. my main reason for upgrading to Vegas was so that i could get Mocha, so i bought Continuum that many of the fx's have mocha built in to them, I make YT videos & wanted an easier way to mask out my van number plate, that's pretty much the only reason i wanted that expensive tracking/masking plugin ๐Ÿ˜‚ & like you say 'FX collections can grow on you', the Mocha in the Continuum fx's is the basic version, I really liked Mocha so before you know it I'd bought Mocha Pro Plugin + Standalone, not long after I bought Sapphire, then thought what the heck & bought the remaining Boris plugin Silhouette, there was only one Boris thing i didn't have, Optics, so bought that just to finish the set. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Yeah there's so many fx's you can't see the wood from the trees, sometimes finding the right fx is hard because many will do a similar thing in their own slightly different way, but that's what i wanted & enjoy the learning process, I'm getting there,

My YT videos are educational, they need to be true to life, I like to keep them simple, 20-40 events cut & made into 20mins-ish videos, apart from the occasional colour/light correction & added text to mention something i'd forgot to say or something i want to point out, the videos have no fancy intro, no added effects, & each event is a 12frame simple crossfade, ๐Ÿ˜‚

I don't need a lot of this fancy Boris stuff, it's more of a toy, a hobby to me, there's so much that i discover new things & ways of combining them almost every day. ๐Ÿ˜ I've no wife, life, kids or pets, I travelled for mths at a time in the summers of the 90s everywhere in Europe, spent almost a yr in Crete at Xmas, 5x2mths Jan-Feb to avoid the English winter, but since the last time i went travelling for 4mths, 14 different countries, I haven't had a holiday since yr 2000, after work instead of sitting watching TV i prefer to play on the PC, editing my clips from my day's work or just experimenting with the fx's i have ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคธโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Cal-Grant wrote on 2/17/2022, 9:42 AM

Folks,

I just wanted to add that I discovered the PIP enabled in a NEW video track that I'd created to do my subtitles in. I discovered it when I tried a one-second long render-test to check the quality at the resolution that I will be rendering at. The subtitles were tiny and offset towards the center of the frame. I went into the video effects for that track (VFX), and sure enough, I found PIP ON - by default. I cancelled it, ran my 1-second-long test render, and all was fine.

Be well, all.

I had the same initial issue trying to burn the movie in full screen. I have Vegas Movie Studio 16.0 Platinum. I have never had this issue before, and I have made a lot of movies. I do not see anything turned on in the Picture in Picture line and I have also muted it. How else can I discover if it is turned on somewhere. Or, when I initially researched this issue, I saw another possible solution with the original formatting (I think GPU) but I would've had to reboot my computer and I wasn't willing to lose the movie at that time. Now, I don't remember exactly what that solution was. Please help as this is extremely frustrating! Thanks!

@A.-Y Please clarify how you have muted it.

I would advice you to check your special video effects, or simply click on the FX box on the left end of your affected video track, and see if the PIP is 'on'. Otherwise, try to follow the advices given in this thread by others. If you have a movie inserted in the editor, it had to come from somewhere, so you must have it saved elsewhere on your computer. If you have made edits, and are wishing to render at this point, just save out of your project, close down the editor and restart it. If you feel you need to reboot the computer, then do so. The PIP problem doesn't stop you from saving your work. You won't lose it.

Other than these things, I'm not an expert, so I can't help further. If your work is important to you, be sure to save the project before leaving the editor (Movie Studio 16 in my case). Again, the PIP problem will not keep you from saving your work. Best wishes.

I just clicked on the icon on the PIP line...

....and thanks Cal-Grant for your response!...haven't had a chance to try yet but it's nice knowing there is hope in sight...

@A.-Y Your image shows you have FX applied to your Text and Video tracks. What are the FX?

A.-Y wrote on 1/31/2023, 4:10 PM

Just transitions between the slides i.e. barn door, iris

EricLNZ wrote on 1/31/2023, 4:21 PM

I don't understand. Your transitions are surely applied to your Events (Slides) individually on the track. What are your track FX?
