When the program started, an update notification displayed. I followed it, the updated is downloaded (500MB).
2 options are given - Update immediately and Install when program is closed. I tried both options a few times but the results are same - ".. unable to update Movie.. 17.0 Platinum while it is running." Of course, I closed the program right after I clicked the button.
Please HELP!
See if you can find (relating to Platinum of course) something like VMSUpdate.exe in C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Movie Studio\17.0

First check Task Manager though to see that there are no VEGAS background processes running.

I just uninstall the previous 17 build (179?) and installed the newly downloaded (build 204) and was successful.
I got the same error, and there was a background process of "Movie Studio" running that apparently the updater wasn't closing. After I did an "End Task" via Task Manager, I ran the VMSUpdate.exe as administrator (I think it already does, but wanted to make sure) as detailed above by vkmast, it updated properly to build 159 (looks like it's the latest build for the non-platinum version).
