When the version number goes up, it's a new version.

11 -> 11.a -> 11.b -> 11.c = new releases, free updates of the same version.

9 -> 10 -> 11 -> 12 = new versions, paid for, not free.

An upgrade and a new version like Chienworks says.
I guess current version owners will be notified soon enough.

edit:
VMS Platinum version 12 builds 333 (32bit) and 334 (64bit) listed available for download on Download page with release notes. At least when I just logged in.
My Software page states: Upgrade to Movie Studio Platinum 12 from 54.06 € 43.95 € ex VAT (Europe).

> "anybody knows if this is just a restyled name of Vegas Movie Studio 11 Platinum, or effectively a something new and enhanced in terms of new features ?"

For one thing, they've added the ability to add expand the capabilities of Movie Studio Platinum 12 by adding command extensions called "FasstApps" that can greatly improve your productivity. These were developed by VASST, the company that makes command extensions like Ultimate S Pro, Mayhem, Scattershot 3D, Caption Assistant, etc. for Vegas Pro. These apps automate a variety of functions like manipulating markers, event properties, special fx, changing speed, voice overs, batch rendering, hollywood movie looks, manipulating media bins and more. Each one designed to make editing faster.

Here is the list that's currently available:

TimeWarp - TimeWarp shifts time beyond 4x up to 10,000x in one click!

VoiceAssistant - Take advantage of single-click voice processing with VoiceAssistant for Movie Studio.

StutterFrame - Recreate Hollywood's most popular effect and create jump frames in just one click. Perfect for adding a little mayhem to your production.

RenderAssistant - Make rendering work for you with RenderAssistant. Now you can bring the power of batch rendering to your projects.

StillMotion - StillMotion creates Slideshows in an instant! Allows you to continue to refine your slideshow once it's on the timeline.

PropertyAssistant - Take control of your project's event aspect ratio, along with any property on hundreds of events at the same time.

MediaTool - Set up media bins, find unused media, load from file system, remove SFK files, and more...

MarkerMaker - Easily create, remove, load & save markers and regions of every kind. Place markers at events, intervals, evenly space, etc.

EventTool - Apply easy automation of Adjustments, Selections, Transitions, and Fades on multiple events simultaneously.

MarkerEditor - Unleash the power of markers and enhance your editing experience. Split events at markers, convert markers to regions, goto markers instantly.

CinemaLooks1 thru 13 - Give your videos a Hollywood-style appearance and feel with CinemaLooks. There are 13 sets of looks to choose from.

AuditAssistant - No more editing errors; AuditAssistant is the one-stop solution to final project checks. Find gaps in your timeline, or buried events, etc.

You can read all about them and purchase them on the Sony Partner Page. If you click on any of the FasstApps, there is a video on that page showing you the app in action. CinemaLooks1 is being offer for free for a limited time.

In the interest of "full disclosure" I work at VASST and developed the FasstApps so I hope you like them. ;-)

Nice! Sony Vegas product page is down right now, but have a look link

I'm sure there is more, but the key appears to be 64-bit support.

New Features in Movie Studio Platinum 12 include:

More tracks, more possibilities: Users can easily produce intricate video projects or record multi-track audio by adding up to 20 video and 20 audio tracks.
Simplified workflow: With new split and trim buttons, 3D project templates, and enhanced timeline interaction, Movie Studio Platinum provides an easier and more streamlined solution for any video editing project.
Publish to Pixelcast™: Users can now share the movie they're editing in Movie Studio Platinum without ever leaving the application by publishing it directly to Pixelcast (www.pixelcast.com); a fun new cloud service that provides easy ways to collaborate and share photos and videos.
Windows Vista and Windows 7 64-bit support: Usage of additional system RAM and overall stability is made possible by installing the 64-bit version of Movie Studio Platinum onto 64-bit Windows Vista or Windows 7 machines.

or simple cheating - at least in my case...

my card was charged with USD 94.95 for HD Platinum 11 on 4th of Aug, at 1am local time, than I received codes for that package....
I claimed this because originally I wanted the NewBlue packages, too - so I ORDERED originally the extended product , and prices were in EUR...(less than 80EUR, price - at the time of ordering of online ordering page - was EUR 79.95...)

I claimed this, because I NEED the extra FX's - now I see that I can upgrade to the simple 12 for EUR 43.95 (~53USD...) or to the Suite for 57.95 EUR (~70 USD)...

My failure is that I ordered in the time when they changed the site itself....
So I loss at least 50 USD on Sony's new version - If I stay at Sony.....

forgot to say: I claimed it on weekend, after the purchase, via the official support form - NO ANSWER TILL NOw FROM SONY....

EU user, contact Sony again (if you have to), they are usually very understanding at times like these.

Here we go again:

Installed the VMSP 12 trial. Tried to finish editing a project that would not work in Vegas Pro 11 (crashes and the dreaded "Vegas Pro Stopped Working")

Looked nice.So I flashed my VISA card and bought the upgrade to VMSP 12.
Then the trouble started:

1: Got an e-mail with the reg.code for DVD Architect - but no code for VMSP 12 ?? How can I register it without reg.code?

2: Already had my first "Vegas Movie Studio Stopped Working" ... obviously it was too much that I opened the Sony text editor... I did not enter any text - just closed it again - but that was enough.

AAAaaarrrggghhhh!!!Q!!
So sorry if I sound kinda negative - but I would really like to do some video editing instead of wasting oceans of time restarting different versions of Vegas with the last of innumerable backups and trying to work around software errors.
It is really bad if you have to do a 15 minutes video in maximum 30 second sub-parts and try to stitch it all together for finalizing.

My email had the code and it works....excited to have more tracks and the 64 Bit head Room.

No sound forge in this download, but still have it.

Upgraded my DVD ARch. though.

For those having issues with VMS12, have a look at the stringent videocard & driver spec requirements. See if updating the driver helps.

NVIDIA
Requires a CUDA-enabled GPU and driver 270.xx or later.
GeForce GPUs: GeForce GTX 4xx Series or higher (or GeForce GT 2xx Series or higher with driver 285.62 or later).
Quadro GPUs: Quadro 600 or higher (or Quadro FX 1700 or higher with driver 285.62 or later).
NVIDIA recommends NVIDIA Quadro for professional applications and recommends use of the latest boards based on the Fermi architecture.
AMD/ATI
Requires an OpenCL-enabled GPU and Catalyst driver 11.7 or later with a Radeon HD 57xx or higher GPU. If using a FirePro GPU, FirePro unified driver 8.85 or later is required.

"64 Bit head Room"

Ummmm, what do you think this means?

"Head room" has nothing to do with the program being 64 bit.
Roberto65 wrote on 8/7/2012, 3:40 AM
Well... what is really giving this new version ?

1. OK, 64-bits... nice...
I have an experience of a 3D Animation SW (which I am currently using), which gave the 64-bit version for FREE!

2. More tracks... ok, nice improvement... really needed ?

3. What else ?

I think it is way too little to justify the upgrade price.
So... I will stick on VMS 11 till for some more time...

Hi Paul, While there is nothing to prevent these from working with Vegas Pro, the current installers only look for Movie Studio 12 so you cannot buy them and install them on a PC that only has Vegas Pro because they won't install without Movie Studio 12 being present.

One big "what else" is the fact that Sony has introduced the FasstApps which are extensions that you can purchase to automate a number of manual tasks in Movie Studio just like Vegas Pro users have. Have you ever wanted to batch render your project to a number of different formats? now you can with Render Assistant. Have you ever wanted to quickly place chapter markers every 10 minutes, or place a marker at every event or convert markers to regions, etc. MarkerMaker and MarkerEditor can do that. Have you ever wanted to change multiple properties on multiple events at the same time (like reduce interlace flicker or disable resample)? Property Assistant can do that. Have you ever wanted to delete all those pesky .sfk files scatter all over your hard drive or delete the media that is not being used by your project? MediaTool can do that. Have you ever wanted to speed up your footage beyond the 4x that Movie Studio allows, up to 10,000x? TimeWarp can do that. Have you ever wanted to continue to work with your slide show after the built-in slide show creator has already placed images on the timeline, or make your slideshow fit your music exactly so that you don't have to manually calculate how long each image should be in order to end on time? StillMotion can do that. etc.

The current collection of FasstApps are just the beginning. Where it goes from here will be driven by you the customer and the things that you want to see automated in Movie Studio. You no longer have to envy Vegas Pro users because they can use scripts and command extensions to improve their productivity. FasstApps are the same command extensions that were once only available to Vegas Pro users, now available to Movie Studio users as well. I think that's a pretty big "what else".

As you can tell, I'm really excited to able to bring these extensions to Movie Studio users and I'm hoping that you see the value that these extensions can bring to your projects.

Well I think it's pretty clear where your loyalties lie Johnny LOL. Roberto, I believe was referring to the application and NOT FasstApps which of course are a paid for extra. Just totting up the ones mentioned in your previous post it comes to the grand sum of €62.65 which is more than the upgrade price from MS v11 > v12. So sorry, I don't think it's that much of a big deal in the least.

From Release Notes Also pasted below.

I think they added a little bit to what was already in V11 (eg. GPU-accelerated video processing), 64-bit (the big new addition?) and some minor workflow additions (incl an extra 10 tracks). Plus the ability to pay for other 3rd party add-ins...

From a Production Suite Perspective, it is the same version of DVDA, Sound Forge, sample plugins (iZotope, even same NB FX and transitions!) I think they threw in the 50 Sony soundtracks and the Magic Bullet Quick Looks included with V12. ...It would have been nice to include a credit for one of the VASST plug-ins with purchase (hint, hint...) if they wanted us to try them out.

There have already been posts regarding significantly faster rendering times...I wonder if that is due to moving from 32 bit to 64 bit architecture alone?

It mnay be worth it for better performance in 64 bit environments (I'm still 32-bit, so just a guess).

2.0 What’s New
What's New in Version 12.0
Video
OpenCL GPU-accelerated video processing (please see System Requirements for information about supported hardware).
Up to 20 video tracks.
The Stereoscopic 3D Adjust plug-in now includes Floating Windows controls to allow you to mask the edge of the video frame to compensate for screen-edge violations.

Audio
Up to 20 audio tracks.

Workflow
64-bit support.
Internet project templates in the New Project dialog.
Selected timeline events are now drawn with a highlight to help you identify them quickly.
Usability improvements for adding media to a project:
Double-clicking media in the Explorer window now adds the media to end of your project on the selected track.
When new media is added to the end of the project, Movie Studio automatically scrolls the timeline and zooms so you can see the new events.
When adding media to the Project Media list, the Project Media tab now displays a brief animation to indicate that media has been added.
Added Trim/Crop, Trim Start, Trim End, and Split buttons to the main toolbar.
Simplified edge trimming for events: press Alt+[ or Alt+] to trim the beginning or end of the selected event to the cursor position.
Improved visibility for fade-in/fade-out, opacity, and gain event evelopes.
Improved visibility and positioning for event buttons (Generated Media, Event Pan/Crop, and Event FX).

Formats
MainConcept AVC/AAC improvements:
Added MP4 templates for Internet distribution.
Added MP4 templates for the Sony Tablet.
Added an Enable progressive download check box to the Video tab of the Custom Settings dialog to allow your videos to begin playing during download.
Added support for GPU-accelerated rendering.

The point is that you only purchase the ones that you need. In the past, we have offered larger plug-ins that cost more money and may have features that you will never use. Our philosophy this time is to offer bite-sized chunks of just the features that you need. You only pay for what you want. e.g., if all you want is batch rendering, then all you buy is batch rendering for $9.95 and you're done. We're hoping this is a more digestible model for our customers.

I'm on Movie Studio Platinum 10 (Windows 7 64 Pro / 12 GB / i7-930) and it works quite well for me. If I were to upgrade to 12:

1) Will my renders run faster?
2) Will 12 open sessions from 10?

These are my 2 biggest concerns. Thanks for your input !!!
ritsmer wrote on 8/7/2012, 2:35 PM
1: Rendering speed is extremely dependent on what media you render from and to - and with the new added GPU acceleration also on your machine and its graphics card - and the type of FXs you use etc etc - so it is impossible to answer this question in a precise way.
You can, however, just download the trial and try out the rendering speed in your environment before considering buying the 12.
Chance is that it might be faster ...

2: Yes.
Markk655 wrote on 8/7/2012, 7:59 PM
See more discussion re: V12 rendering here

I didn't see any difference on a 32 bit system in V11 vs. V12 rendering 1920x1080 60i m2ts to m2ts (even with CUDA help). Preview appears to be about the same to me.

It appears to be that the major speedup being reported might be due to using the 64 bit version on a 64 bit system.

On a plus side, I do like the new highlighting of selected events.

As an aside, anyone notice that:
1. Sony dropped "Vegas" from the name. It is now Movie Studio (Platinum).
2. V11 was at build 322. V12 is starting at an eerily similar, slightly larger build 333?

Hey forum users,

Does anyone know how to get the NewBlue FX working? They supposedly are part of the package when you buy Movie Studio Platinum 12, which I have done, but they aren't in the Generated Media fx section.

I found a post saying that they are avaliable for download from this link:

http://www.newbluefx.com/sonytitler/

but when I downloaded and executed, the installer said it couldn't find Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 11 on my computer! Even though it is registered and shows up on the Sony Profile page for me haha.

Shouldn't it have been looking for Platinum 12 anyway?

Anyway does anyone know how to get it? Or has successfully gotten it?

Cheers
AlanADale wrote on 8/8/2012, 4:16 AM
They are available with the Platinum 'Production' version. Is that what you have got?
Markk655 wrote on 8/8/2012, 8:06 AM
NewBlue FX and transitions show up in the FX and transition screens respectively. Titled EX should show up in the Media Generator tab. They are sold only as part of the Production Suite, not part of MS Platinum. If you ordered the Suite by download, there should be a link. The link you quote was the one for VMS Plat Prod Suite.

As an FYI, for previous VMS versions, you needed to have version installed PRIOR to installing the NB FX. The older VMS version could be deleted after the install of the NB FX and they would be retained for the new version. I haven't checked for VMS 12 to see if it still exhibits the same behavior.
