Movie Studio Platinum 17 won't import a file, works in VEGAS Pro trial

Emily-Karp wrote on 11/30/2020, 4:56 PM

I have a bunch of mp4 files that I know I was able to import into my Vegas Movie Studio 17.0 Platinum Edition months ago before some updates on both my computer and I think to the program. I tried everything I could in terms of codecs to try to get them to import now but I keep getting an error which states: "The application does not support this file type".

I just tried installing a free trial of VEGAS Pro 18.0 and I was able to import my file!! It worked.

Is there anything I can do that isn't converting a ridiculously huge number of files to get them to work in my purchased already version of Vegas Movie Studio Platinum? I don't want to spend the money on Pro.

@Emily-Karp The first thing you should do, when something doesn't work when it used to, is to try a reset as described here.

This procedure works for MSP as well as Vegas Pro. Make sure you select the option to delete the cache. Note that preferences will be deleted as well so make a note of them beforehand.

@Emily-Karp: Please provide the MediaInfo readout for your files.

I just tried resetting to default settings per these instructions, everything is reset but it still won't let me import the file. I was able to import these files in my Pro free trial, so it's very frustrating that I can't here in my Movie Studio Platinum... And like I said, these files used to be able to be imported into my Movie Studio Platinum a few months ago. Any ideas as to what I could try next?

Your file is HEVC. Try Options/Preferences and the File I/O tab. There either tick or untick "Enable legacy HEVC decoding".

Thanks for the idea, EricLNZ. It was already checked, though, and unchecking it, closing the program, and re-opening it, the file still won't import, as if it's an unsupported file type, unfortunately. It's certainly still frustrating.

I may just try using Handbrake to convert the files to a format that might be able to be imported...

@Emily-Karp

Your sourcefile, showed here, has a pretty low bitrate for such a file, but the biggest problem for the program is the variable framerate, that Vegas Movie Studio cannot load, unless it it merged to constant framerate with a program like Handbrake.
Maybe you can add here how you collected that mp4 , program and choosen options please, maybe we can give some help.

Be warned I've just discovered I'm having problems with my Handbrake created mp4 files. They work perfectly in VMS16 Platinum and I'm pretty certain they were working well in VMS17 Platinum until now. Maybe Build 204 is causing another problem. Both VMS16 and 17 are using, or trying to use, "so4compoundplug.dll".

Hmm converting seems to be working for now, the files importing ok... so I'll just stick to that
