"Movie Studio Platinum has stopped working"

Marjorie-Beeler wrote on 4/13/2020, 11:29 AM

Every time I try to add one of my old .mov files to a project, I get the message "Movie Studio Platinum has stopped working", and the app closes without saving. I've tried downloading Quick Time twice, with no luck. I'm running Vegas Movie Studio 16 Platinum the I just bought in January 2020--don't know the version. I'm running on a new hp computer with Windows 10. I can add newer videos with no problem, but old .mov files shut it down every time--and those are the really important videos for my family projects. Help!

Welcome here in the community.
VMS 16 Pl is using the SO4 Compound plugin for using those files, so it is not needed to install the unsupported QT player.

To help you you have to provide us with the MediaInfo of those unwilling files.
Look here how to do that: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

I printed the instructions and tried to install the mediainfo app. When I tried to open my .mov file with the mediainfo app, my computer gave me a notice that the version of mediainfo would not run on my computer. So, I uninstalled it and installed another version from the website. Long story short, none would work on my new HP computer with windows 10, 64 bit. Do you have any other solution to getting .mov files to open in my VMS 16 Pl project? I appreciate your help. I believe the old .mov files were made with my Canon digital camera.

j-v wrote on 4/13/2020, 2:13 PM

After you have installed MediaInfo the only thing you have to do is :

1. Go in the Windows explorer to a video file and rightclick on it
2. This pops up and choose mediaInfo

You must not try to open your file with the app, only rightclick on the file.
That's all

Of course, because you did not what the link for MediaInfo, I gave you, asked you to do: a screenshot of that MediaInfo as @Nick Hope showed in that link.

Please forgive me. I am not as computer savvy as you. I followed the instructions, which said to highlight the info in Mediainfo, copy it, and paste it in your forum post. I tried, over and over, but could not select-highlight-any of the info in order to copy. I would LOVE to do a screenshot, but do not know how to paste it in this message, as it doesn't paste. I can paste it on a document, but not here. If you have no idea of how to help me just say so, and I will try somehow to go through the Vegas help--although they keep sending me here.

Everyone here is able to make screenshots with Windows Paint and place them here as @vkmast wrote here
Everyone is able to select texts and copy that and than paste that here in a comment like I'm now doing:

I am so glad that you are able to do there what you tell me to do here. I know how to copy and paste. I can see that you did a great job of it. But you are just emphasizing that everyone can do it but me--but you are giving me no HELP on how to do it. I cannot get a cursor in the text to highlight it! I thought the info I gave you would help. Please stop telling me how stupid I am not to be able to do whateveryone there can do and admit that you have no clue as how to get my .mov files into my production.

KenB wrote on 4/16/2020, 3:38 AM

Hi Marjorie, once you get the MediaInfo window up showing the video properties, go to the View menu (in the MediaInfo window) and select Text. Now you will be able to copy/paste the information. To select all the text quickly, press Ctrl-A. Then you can press Ctrl-C to copy.

To ensure you always see the Text every time to run MediaInfo, go to Options, select Preferences and change the Output format to Text.

Hi Marjorie, I found some old MOV videos and tried adding them to VMS 16. It didn't crash, but I got this error box:

I then downloaded QuickTime 7.7.9 for Windows from here: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL837

After downloading I ran the installer application QuickTimeInstaller.exe and I clicked on the Typical button to install the typical components of QuickTime. I restarted VMS and then I was able to add the old MOV video.

However, your video has a different Video Codec ID (yours is "mp4v-20", mine is "jpeg"), so it's possible yours won't work even with QuickTime installed.

Hi Ken,

I have seen that same error box, which is why I thought it was a Quicktime error. It seems that I had the same results, which really confused me when my movie studio crashed when I started a new movie and the same thing happened. I saw your other post taking it offline asking me to send you a copy of one of my .mov files via Dropbox or similar, but I would need instructions on how to do so. Strangely, I was unable to send my response to that post. I would be so happy to solve this problem. I thought it would be a simple one, but it evidently is not the case. I used Vegas Movie Studio for many years on my old computer with windows 7 and never had problems with .mov files. This new Movie Studio software is all different and very frustrating, but I am determined to master it. Do you think the problem is with windows 10 or the new software? Thanks for your patience.

Marjorie

If you use (only) Power user mode, you'll likely feel much more at home.

VPro 17 got a new tab, that version 16 had not already, with a possibility that maybe helps a little, I don't know because I never have to do with .mov files.

I think the new upgrade of VMS 16 is about to be released in the near future, so maybe it's worth trying than that upgrade. Trying out a program is for 30 days with a project limit for rendering of 2 minutes.

Does your Kodak Z740 still work? If so, you could shoot just a few seconds of anything (a brick wall would do!) and then upload it here. If not, and you're okay with sharing one of your existing MOV videos with the world, then you could try uploading a small clip here (I'm not sure if there is a file size limit). To upload a file on this forum just press the blue "Upload file" icon at the top of the reply box when replying.

Do you think the problem is with windows 10 or the new software? Thanks for your patience.

It could be the new software not recognising your particular MOV video format. A sample video would help us to find out.

Ken, This video will upload to VMS16 fine and play with sound in all programs. This next one crashes my VMS16 and will only play with sound in the "Cool File Viewer"--no sound in "Movies & TV" or "Win Media Player" It is shot sideways, but is an example. I will try to upload it on this post

Ken.

@KenB My understanding is video files get converted when uploaded to the forum hence it is necessary to upload them elsewhere like Google Drive.

Hi Marjorie, EricLNZ is correct. Your uploaded file was converted to another format (MP4), so is no good for trying to see your original clip. You will need to use another method to make the clip available. Do you have Google Drive, DropBox or OneDrive where you could copy it and share the link? If not, will send a PM with some instructions.

Ken.

It looks like all of my .mov files from all my digital cameras recorded in the format of MPEG-4 visual per MediaInfo. The Format profile was either Advanced Simple@L3 or Simple@L1--which didn't seem to matter, as one of the Advanced Simple@L3 files opened in Movie Studio, but with no sound--and another crashed the software immediately. I don't have my old Kodak Z740 to send a short .mov file. This looks hopeless. I'll have to see if I can somehow get help from Vegas or get a different movie software. But thanks for trying and being so patient with me.

Hi Marjorie. I managed to find a MOV file on the Internet with the same characteristics as your file above. When I tried to add it, sure enough Movie Studio crashed. However there is a solution. The problem is the So4 Compound Reader plugin, which has caused problems with many a video format! If you have installed QuickTime, then it's simply a matter of disabling the So4 Compound Reader plugin, and you should then be able to add your MOV file, because Movie Studio will use QuickTime to read it instead of the So4 plugin.

To disable the So4 plugin, click on the Options menu in Movie Studio, then hold down the Shift key and click on "Preferences...". This will cause the normally hidden "Internal" tab to appear in the Preferences box. Now click on the Internal tab. At the bottom, next to "Show only prefs containing:" enter "so4" (without the quotes). Next to the second line "Enable So4 Compound Reader for..." the value will currently be TRUE. Double-click the value and type in FALSE. Then click OK. You will be asked to restart Movie Studio, so do it. Now try adding your MOV file. Hopefully it should now work.

Ken,

I thought you had found the answer there for a minute, but it didn't work out on the long movie I have almost completed. After following your instructions, I tried to add the .mov file, and it added without crashing. However, all I got was an audio file that wouldn't work. Tried deleting and re-adding to no avail. Then I checked the rest of my movie and most of my many video files were messed up. Some older ones were ok, but all the newer ones either had video and no audio or audio but no video--with one newer video in the middle doing just fine with both. When I tried moving a video file, it knocked the sound out of every video in the whole movie. I was able to download that .mov file into a new trial movie and it worked fine with video and audio. So, I closed the software and restarted and reversed your instructions to restore it as it was. My long movie returned with no problems (whew!). The trial movie still had the .mov file in it. The video was fine but the audio was a loud static.

I want to thank you for your amazing work on this. You have been a help and inspiration. I can understand if you don't want to spend more time on this, as it seem an impossibility at this time. I can find NO help at all on the Vegas website--the community forum is the only option. Evidently the covid virus has everyone staying at home. Someday maybe this pandemic will be over and things will get back to an adjusted normal. Until then--thanks--and stay well.
