MS13 Strange behavior with fading 2 adjacent clips

Birk Binnard wrote on 3/15/2014, 10:08 AM
I have 2 clips and I want the first one to end with fade-to-black and the second one to start the same way.

When I apply fade-out to the end of clip #1 and fade-in to the start of clip #2, and then join the 2 clips together on the timeline, the fades disappear. "Join" means move the start of the 2nd clip up to the end of the 1st clip.

Why does the fade disappear, and how can I stop this from happening?

If I join the 2 clips together first and click the Fade button, the blue Fade handle does not appear on the 2nd clip, but I can still accomplish the fade-in by clicking/dragging the top-left corner of the clip. However, this does not work for the 1st clip - there is no Fade handle and I cannot click/drag the top-right corner of the clip.

In Vegas (like many other computer programs) there is often more than one way to accomplish something.

Another way to do this is to add a BLACK segment overlapped on the end of the first video ... slide it left to overlap the video ... then slide the beginning of the second video left to overlap the BLACK video. You can extend the length of the BLACK segment to determine how long the fade out .. totally black ... fade in times are.

BLACK is, I believe, in MEDIA GENERATORS ... SOLID COLOR.

Very clever alternative - thanks. I would not have thought of that.

But...shouldn't the normal fades work as expected? Meaning - not disappear when 2 clips are joined? Previous version did not have this problem. Seems like a bug to me.

Birk,
try "Expand track layers".
This bug was discussed in a previous thread

Gosh - I never knew about that one. It does work OK as a work-around. Thanks for pointing out something new (to me anyway.)

Seems a bit strange though - just what are "track layers" anyway? Apparently they have something to do with compositing, but I've never done that. I always thought (guessed) compositing was done with multiple (separate) tracks.

This is not strange and it is not a bug at all. Due to the design of Vegas as a compositor/NLE this is the way it is designed to work. Other NLE configurations allows you to correspond fx and events in different methodologies. That is sometimes why an experienced Adobe editor might throw his hands up after sample of Vegas because they don't understand the design premise of the interface.

From an SCS "Expert Advice: Tips and Tricks" document (20 techniques for organizing your workspace, part 2):
"Right-click the track header and choose Expand Track Layers to work with events and transitions on separated track layers."
You now need this to be able to do certain edits in the new "touch-enabled" v. 13.
A "bug" relating to this is discussed here.
