MULTIPLE CRASHING AND BUGS WITH Vegas 18 BUILD 373

brenda-oBB wrote on 11/20/2020, 11:31 AM
  1. Since I bought Vegas 15, I have had endless crashes, bugs, of every kind. I went to an AMD (from Intel) build and I noted "less". But still present. I always use Nvidia cards.
  2. Laptop is Intel I7 7700, 32GB ram, M.2 Samsung SSD + Samsung SSHD. G Force 1060
  3. Vegas 18 373 seemed to work well - for one hour. Then it began, thick and fast. Rendering crashes. In fact, crashes of EVERY kind. From just dropping an image into the time line to strange "double clicks" (which I never did)...on the time line. Every few minutes the video preview will go red. I save and close - it opens ok. Then it starts again when I alter the video time line. Continuous crashing - and it will not even give me the option to send a crash report.
  4. Right now Vegas is sucking %17 of the CPU continuously despite it just sitting their. The fan is whirring - this is "new". It always settles and goes quiet once I stop fiddling with the timeline and leave it idle. Now it's continuous.
  5. I have the latest Windows 10 updates and driver updates.
  6. I note that rendering crashes and freezing ALWAYS occur on downloaded you tube video. ALWAYS. I have never had a crash with my own low and high res footage while rendering.
  7. There appears no pattern. Except that the bigger the project - the more it crashes. But now with Build 373, it's crashing almost instantly just by adding video to the time line.
  8. When I updated to the fastest Samsung M.2 and SSHD I noted a week of seemingly "ok" use. Crashes went way down...and then...bizarrely...started again.
  9. I suspect all this "may" be the laptop. There is something wrong with it. But...it also did it on my old AMD 3700 with GE Force 1060 desktop.
  10. Like I said...there is NO PATTERN. Except...one week of nice use when I upgraded the storage to the fastest I could get.
  11. I've done everything...switched off the gpu blah blah blah...messed with plug in's...blah blah blah...messed with memory cache...this is not my first rodeo.
  12. I am making one last attempt to keep Vegas before I drop Vegas and move to Apple with their amazing M1. I DREAD the move. But I cant go on with this anymore - three years of editing hell.
  13. I have an Eluktronics AMD 4800H with GE Force 2060 on the way. If the extra power and hardware integration does not cease this crashing, then I am done with Vegas.
  14. I hope this is a VERY BAD series of bad luck with regards hardware.
  15. I will let you know what happens as to leave Vegas is like leaving an old girlfriend and all the familiarity. But 6 months of pain into crash free editing will be bliss.
  16. I am hopeful increased general and specific processing power will fix this. If not...there is something very, very, very wrong with Vegas.

MAJOR EDIT - I also note this crappy I7 7700 dog of a cpu is getting slower and slower with every Windows update. The I7 range from 2017-2018 were notorious for "flaws" (backdoors) and have suffered greatly with "bug fixes" - Meltdown Spectre etc. I used to get %80-%90 CPU usage and 60-80fps constant rendering HD 4000kb/s end product. I now get 40fps. THIS may have something to do with it. Maybe.

If there is something specific you can suggest, please do. I'm at my wits end.

Regards.

First of all download the latest Nvidia STUDIO driver nr 457.30 from Nvidia

after that do a complete reset of Vegas 18 latest build and a make no change afterwards following exactly this advice : https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

On the laptop from signature I use the program without problems also for editing and rendering 4K GOPro 7 HEVC and DJI Pocket avc files, it is nearly the same as your laptop.

Many thanks. Downloading now. This must be just out. I checked a few days ago. But...I've done this before and the same problem will occur. I'll remain positive AND I am going to record the screen with an external camera the first time I fire it up and have a record of just how bad it is and ask how can people with the same or similar hardware have such problems or no problems at all?

Regards.

@brenda-oBB If it’s similar media for most of the crashes, best to post the media details, using the free mediainfo tool. Also your project properties and render templates used for rendering.

This was downloaded off You Tube with "4K Video Downloader". I find that %99 of the time, "render freezing" is ALWAYS downloaded You Tube videos.

Just a note, the new Driver Update and deleting Vegas settings have made it run much better. Render speeds are up. Nvidia GPU use is up as well as cpu fps. Definitely feels better. Will keep playing.

Many thanks for the assistance. I do not want to drop Vegas.

Yes. Did that. Just studio driver. Deleting all settings.

@brenda-oBB The video is VFR, that can cause playback slow downs etc. Also, a guess here, if its a streamed video clip, they can sometimes have extremely long groups of pictures, this can cause slow seek times, stuttering playback. A small sample clip would be required to check this out.

Its a TedX Talk. Off their YT Channel. Hmmmm...one of those things I guess. Lets see what an AMD 4800H goes like.

JN- wrote on 11/20/2020, 2:24 PM

@brenda-oBB Very likely, a lot better, if my guess is correct, the faster machine may have no issue. The combination of VFR and very long GOP, if thats the case, is more noticeable on a lower specced machine.

While I wait for my AMD 4800H, the crashing is continuous at every level. It is the worst it has ever been. Rendering is now almost impossible. 5 minute segments...maybe. But if it turns out MAGIX Vegas will not run on a lower end laptop like an I7 7700...I'd say MAGIX Germany owes me some money and I will pursue it. Because it has been hell for three years. And even an AMD 3700 was bad enough. There is something wrong with the software. Its as simple as that.

brenda-oBB wrote on 12/3/2020, 1:31 PM

I counted 27 crashes in three hours on every level - transfer image into time line. Transfer video into time line. Watching video in time line. You name it - it crashes. When Sony ran the show I never had a problem - ever. Sony Vegas 12. I bought MAGIX Vegas 15 and it has been hell ever since and this is how I make my money.

brenda-oBB wrote on 12/3/2020, 1:32 PM

The video is standard 30fps Samsung 1080p 24mb/s. Just...crash. Coz...why not. I'm Vegas.

The only thing we could do to help you anymore is if you upload somewhere on a cloudservice as dropbox a projectfile (veg) with only 1 short sourcefile that was used in it, that gave you a crash. Than we are able to look at our installation what maybe is the reason.

Ok. Will do now. I dont want to be the "irate customer". But it is three years now. I've problem solved till the cows come home. Like I said...AMD 4800H. If the new lappy (I travel) doesnt fix it, I have to try something else.

Of interesting note....I lowered the bit rate from 4mb/s to 2mb/s and so far it has surpassed the main crash point...I will let you know.

You rendered a 20 second piece of footage. Not sure what you mean when you say..."Nothing wrong with it". I too can render many minutes of footage - and there are multiple tracks and transitions. But it will crash 26% in...or at random points regardless.

I will send you all the information required. But right now, I cannot render anything except it seems in 5 minute segments.

I do have encrypted data partitions.

brenda-oBB wrote on 12/3/2020, 3:34 PM

Machine Specs in my signature. I'll also place on the official page for help.

Since going from Vegas 12 to 15, it has been non stop problems.

  1. Random crashing when adding anything to the time line.
  2. Watching "settled" video in the time line.
  3. Rendering crashes of every kind. Especially with You Tube footage. Though, with the 18 update I find it now happening on "my" standard 1080p phone footage - this is particular to Vegas 18.

OF NOTE - I upgraded my laptop with the fastest M2 and SSD storage I could get and it seemed to lower crashes WAY down and footage up to 1080p played without stutter in the time line. That lasted a few days....then it was back to normal.

I had an AMD 3700 desktop and had the same problems though they appeared to occur less frequently.

I rendered much more without a problem. On my renderdestination I have more than 100 GB available and you have?
On your renderdestination you need twice the space needed for the render amount.
