You can. I think by default pressing the left/right arrow keys moves you two frames, but if you zoom in time slightly ( click on the "+" to right below tracks) that will change to one frame movement on timeline for each press of arrow keys.

That is in addition of course to ALT+arrow

The left/right arrows move you one PIXEL. Som it could be 1,2,5,1000 frames. :) It's very handy once you get used to it.

Also, if you hold ALT and hit the UP arrow, it will only allow you to zoom in until each thumbnail on the video is 1 frame. :)

I don't know about Movie Studio but as it is built on the Vegas engine I would think it might be the same -

F3 moves one frame back at a time.
F9 moves one frame forward at a time.

It does not matter how zoomed, or not zommed, the timeline is.

Pressing and holding the ALT key and then pressing the left or right arrow does the same thing (one frame at a time), but if you press and hold the keys you will continue to move in that direction.

And, if you don't know, the J, K, and L keys let you scrub through the video: each time you press J or L, the video speeds up in the reverse or forward direction. K halts the video. You can change the range of the scrub speed in the preferences menu.

Isn't that what I said to the statment "The ability to go forward and backward one frame during editing at a time is desperately needed in both vegas and movie studio." ? Maybe I wasn't clear, sorry. :)

You were clear. I was just trying to differentiate between what you get with F3/F9 and what you get with the Alt-Arrow Keys. The automatic repeat function doesn't work with F3/F9, but does with Alt-Arrow. Both approaches go back and forward one frame, but the Alt-Arrow also lets you press and hold the keys and just sit there and watch it until it gets close -- a little like the scrub function. F3/F9 isn't better or worse than Alt-Arrow: It's just different. Since no one pointed out the automatic repeat functionality difference, I just thought I'd let the original poster know.

On the Contour Shuttle Pro it is the top row of buttons, the 2 central ones. Right of centre goes 1 frame forward, left of centre goes 1 frame backwards. Very useful!

There's a numerical keypad shortcut 1 and 3 to nudge a clip. But how do you do this if you don't have a numerical keypad?

Very simple. Just change the shortcut key from Num 1 or Num 3 to something else. Open Customize Keyboard and E.g. search for Num 3 as shown below. Then change to whatever you like.
