Need BluRay burner to create BluRay image?

I'm using VMS11 to upscale my SD recordings to 1440x1080 while adding blurred pillars instead of black.

The issue is that if the computer doesn't have a BluRay burner attached, I can't make a BluRay image. When my USB BD writer is plugged in, the disk info is populated (don't need a blank BD-R in the drive, just the drive needs to be there), and when set to make image only the OK button properly starts creation of the image.

If the BD burner is not plugged in, the disk info is empty and grayed out (no problem), but also when in make image only mode, pressing the OK button doesn't do anything at all.

This isn't a huge deal since I have a BD burner, but it doesn't make sense since I shouldn't have to have a burner in order to create the ISO. I'm burning these ISOs to DVDs with ImgBurn to make BD5 disks.

How are other folks making BD5 or AVCHD disks with VMS?

I'm making them pretty much the same way. "Render image only" does work here with my VMSP 11 {build 322) without the BD burner plugged in though.
Have you tried checking/unchecking "Skip drive..." or the Advanced/legacy... in Prefs. / Settings?

There are a few emulators, called "Virtual Drives."
DVDFab Virtual Drive is what I have on my machine, it works and its free.

Messing with those check boxes in the preferences fixed a problem where it sometimes wouldn't detect my BD burner even though it's there and plugged in.

But it didn't fix the problem of needing the burner present to render an ISO. If the burner isn't there (or the software fails to detect it) then pressing the OK button does nothing. If the burner is detected, then I can render to ISO--pressing the OK button starts rendering.

I wonder what's different about your system. I also have build 322.

Maybe the VMSP 11 b 322 / DVDAS 5.0 b 128 combination that I have?
I tested the VMSP 11 b 322 / DVDAS 5.0 b 157 combination with another machine, used your workflow (Render image only in VMSP) and it did not render (no BD burner there).
You could try going back to DVDAS b 128, but maybe not worth the trouble, as you have a workaround.
SCS did change their policy regarding BD5 and AVCHD discs in the fall 2011 updates of VPro 11/ VMSP 11/ DVD Architects.

Your mention of DVDAS was excellent because I never bother to use it. It will render just fine to an ISO without trying to auto-detect a BD burner before letting me render the way VMS does. So my trouble is solved. I prepare the BD ISO file with DVDAS then burn it with imgburn. I guess there could be compatibility issues with some BD players burning Blu-Ray file structure to DVD vs using strict AVCHD format, but my LG players don't mind. They identify as Blu-Ray and play fine.

Final complaint about MVS/DVDAS is that they insist that only PCM audio is compliant for Blu-Ray. AC-3 is also compliant and takes a lot less space.
