OT: Work flow with a ProTools guy

Jessariah67 wrote on 5/18/2020, 6:38 AM

Hey All,

Just wondering what workflow anybody might have found works well. I'm about to go into post on a movie project. Each scene will be its own VEG project. In the past, I have handled all dialogue cleanup and overall mixing inside Vegas - just dropping score cues I got from my composer into the master timeline. But we're at anew level now, and even though I'm still doing the final render in Vegas, I need to have all of the audio work done - including the final mixes - in PT. I'm trying to figure out the best way to set up a workflow that will allow for "tweaking" the timeline (if that comes up - which it likely will) without having to "rebake the entire cake" and retime the audio in PT and render the entire movie's audio tracks over again just because a scne got shortened, added or deleted...

On the movie we finished up last year, my PT guy was working in a single project file, which quickly turned into a nightmare. So I need dialogue cleaned up scene by scene, per character, score placement within Vegas from composer-supplied cues, then the most effective way to send it all out (separated audio tracks) for mixing.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!
KH

Is the picture "locked"?

Wish there were easier ways to follow a post on here. I don't have any answers for you but I'm definitely interested to hear what others come up with

System 1:

Windows 10
i9-10850K 10 Core
128.0G RAM
Nvidia RTX 3060 Studio driver [most likely latest]
Resolution        3840 x 2160 x 60 hertz
Video Memory 12G GDDR5

System 2:

Lenovo Yoga 720
Core i7-7700 2.8Ghz quad core, 8 logical
16G ram
Intel HD 630 gpu 1G vram
Nvidia GTX 1050 gpu 2G vram

Vegas pro can can export an AAF file , which PTs can import, The AAF will have the audio timeline, events with volume, pan, fades, ect, Like an OMF file, it does contain any plug-ins or the parameters and such.

That would make things easier, but it's impractical to make that a requirement until after it's been accepted by the distributor - so I guess the final mix could be performed after acquisition, once everything is actually set, and just be added to the deliverables list...

rraud - I'll have to look into that. Sounds like an audio verson of an EDL file...Probably needs a mirroed work drive? Thanks again for the input.

Michael - I think there is a way to follow a post. Is there a check box when you post a response?

@Jessariah67 nope. I'll just have to remember to keep an eye out for replies :-)

Excuse me, "the distributor"? Is there no producer? Director? Editor?

Anyways, a moving target is much harder to hit. And more costly.

Good luck! :)

@Jessariah67

Hi,

Have you considered linking Vegas and ProTools in master/slave slave/master using LoopBe1? It uses MIDI Timecode to link the programs.

I haven't used it with Vegas, only with Magix Video Pro X and Samplitude Pro X3 but it should work as Vegas uses MTC. With both programs loaded, pressing play on the master also plays the slave. So, you can go back and forth between the programs to tweak things, like adjusting the duration of an event, cut point, etc. in Vegas, while dubbing, scoring, editing audio in the DAW. Of course you need 2 or more screens to do this.

Vegas Pro 18 Edit, Vegas Movie Studio 16 Platinum, Magix Video Pro X17 Ultimate, Magix Vidéo Deluxe 2026 Plus, Xara Designer Pro X19, Samplitude Pro X8 Suite, Music Maker 2025 Premium, SF Audio Cleaning Lab 4, Sound Forge Pro 16 and more.

Yes, an EDL.

AAF export (File> Export) has the option to embed the media files or have them separate.

@adis-a3097

Yes, there obviously is a Producer, Director, Editor - but if a distributor has suggestions, I'm certainly not going to dismiss them without consideration. "Finished" and "Found a Home" can be two different things, depending on the circumstances.

Have you tried this below the Post?

@vkmast

You just posted a graphic...

The graphic/screenshot refers to the "Follow" which shows below the original Post at the top of this thread. It turns to "Followed" if you click it. Don't know if it works.
