pan tool on MP4-files freezes vegas pro 18

Bz-vegas wrote on 3/3/2021, 12:11 PM

Hi!
It took a while before I found out what's going on, but now I know.

Whenever I use MP4 file video clips, it practically freezes the program. I just bought a year long subscription to Vegas Pro 18 and now, whenever I crop or turn/tilt a video, it freezes the whole thing. I have to convert the mp4's to wmv before I can properly edit with them, which is not something I believe should be necessary when working with such a well known piece of video editing software.

Does anyone have any clue as to how to fix this? How can I get sony vegas to work with MP4? My laptop is brand-new, bought it partly to go next level in video editing, so I hate that this is happening now.

Looking forward to some advice!

Maybe to use Vegas Pro 18?
If you have Sony Vegas Pro 18, that must be a pirated version, for which this is not the website to talk about , see here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/sony-vegas-vs-vegas--119881/

Hi!
That's just my bad in my wording. I do not have a pirated version, I bought the MAGIX version a few days ago. I've just got them mixed up. I can assure you, I've bought it. Could even show proof if that gets me the help I require.

To help you we need information about your exact hardware , Windows version , amount of usable RAM, exact driverversions if you have one or more GPU's, projectsettings and the MediaInfo of your used Mp4.

alrighty then.

1. Vegas build: Version 18.0 (build 434)
2. Windows edition and version: Windows 10 Home
3. device used to make video: HUAWEI Mate 20 lite
4. Destination: YouTube
5. Symptom: Whenever I use MP4 files in my Vegas pro 18 software and I try to tilt the image (for instance, it's recorded in portrait and I want to flip it 90 degrees) by using the pan tool (or even moving it with the pan tool) the screen freezes for 10 seconds.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10750H CPU @ 2.60GHz   2.59 GHz
RAM: 16GB

About that second link. I'm sorry but my laptop is brandnew and fresh. I don't feel like downloading and installing unnecessary software onto it. I hope this info will do to find the issue.

@Bz-vegas Hi Bart, unfortunately its a bit like going to the doc and telling him that he can diagnose your ailments but he's not to use any of his diagnostic tools. The Mediainfo tool is really useful, and virtually essential for users to help you with problem clips. The next best thing is to make the clip or similar available for download for testing by users.

Its possible that the source is variable frame rate. This is harder for VP to handle. If this is the case you are better off converting it to constant frame rate. In my signature theres a util VFR2CFR to do this. Also @wwaag's HO tools and Handbrake can also do the conversion.

Mediainfo would give you the necessary information, i.e. frame rate mode: variable or constant.

As VEGAS 16 Pro/Movie Studio(s) do not have build 434, the 1. must be an "unintended mistake". 🙃

You are absolutely not helpful and honestly the toxicity on these Vegas forums is ridiculous. You sound incredibly elitist, when the first comment you place is accusing me of piracy. If I had pirated this software, I wouldn't have bothered reaching out to the community, would I? I didn't spend 200 euro to get treated like this. The version 16.0 was a typo. I'm using 18 pro like I keep saying. Honestly, posting here has been an absolute waste of my time and I would've been better off reaching out to the actual developers of the software. Disgusting.

Thanks for your help, you seem to be the only one with an actual intention to help me out. I'll keep your advice in mind and reach out to the developers' support team to provide them with the necessary information. I did some googling and I found that almost all phones record in variable frame-rate. I'll keep this in mind and use my Nikon in the future instead, or convert the files to WMV.

@Bz-vegas I'm sorry you find us toxic but we were just trying to clarify exactly what software you were using as you appeared very confused.

And yes we do get posts here from folk using pirated software. Some even have the audacity to tell us they are using a pirated version! Hence we are very wary of any mention of "Sony" Vegas.

Yes, I was confused, that's why I needed some help finding out how to find a solution.

Hm, yeah I understand it's a problem. For me, I just got recommended from a friend to buy "Sony Vegas" and when I googled "Sony Vegas" I got to the site for Vegas 18. It's an easy mistake to make for a program that's been known as Sony Vegas for so long. No pirating here.

@Bz-vegas Converting your files to wmv is a terrible way to go. You should not have problems with mp4 files. But mp4 is a container and we need to find out what is inside them. Unfortunately you haven't given us any info. Using the mediainfo app is frequently recommended. It's a small file. Alternatively if you have MPC-HC player installed on your laptop the media info from that will suffice.

For converting, see JN-'s "signature" (click on it) for a tool to convert for variable to constant frame rate.

I second converting to a non-lossy format, or at least better quality one than WMV.

Possibly premature as until we have the media info we don't know if vfr is a possible problem. There may only be a slight variation which Vegas can handle.

Thanks for the help. You've convinced me and I do need to get rid of this problem, so here's the mediainfo output.

Well the file is 1920x1080 VFR with a variation of 8.506 fps to 30.010 fps which is sizeable. Presumably you've been able to import the files okay and your problem only starts when you crop or turn/tilt a clip. Suggestions:

Convert to CFR as previously recommended to see if that solves your problem. If it doesn't give us details on what exactly you are doing. If you are trying to correct incorrect orientation there's a better way than using Pan/Crop.

This is what I was trying to do. I'll see if I can find better ways instead of using pan/crop!

Right click on a clip on timeline, or in Project Media window, and select Properties. Then Media tab and go to Rotation. There's a drop down box with options.
