Playback while editing

Billy-Griffin wrote on 12/19/2023, 11:18 AM

For months now, I have struggled to get smooth video to play back in Sony Vegas Pro while trying to edit. It's to the point where it often times just freezes up / locks up, and I have to do a restart of the software. The video, no matter what playback quality I choose, seems to just lag and freeze / strobe with no ability to troubleshoot this. Is there anyone that can please, please help me? I have a machine with 128 GB of video RAM, one of the best machines for editing up to 8K, but I cannot even use Sony Vegas to often times even play back HD video because of the lags, strobing, and locking up!

Which version of Sony Vegas? The last one from Sony Creative Software was #13.

Vegas Pro 21 is what I have now.

I have a suspicious that there's just something in the settings that isn't tapping my graphics memory, don't know. I'm no expert, just familiar with Vegas and struggling with this continued problem with freezing up, won't play back the timeline in the preview window, etc. etc.

To be clear, Sony VEGAS has not existed since 2016. Magix owns it now.

Some formats are going to decode poorly no matter how powerful your system is. In this case, use proxies. Right click on the media in the project media bin, select "create video proxy" from the following menu, and wait for that process to finish. Set the preview quality to "preview" to enable the proxies after they finish rendering.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

Beyond the obvious misattribution, for peer support on the forum, you will need to post your source file properties, project properties, and timeline information including effects and filters. You can start with section "C" here:

If I had issues for months, I would have contacted support a long time ago to solve this problem. Have you done this?

@Billy-Griffin It's more likely the specific media type causing issues in VEGAS. Can you share MediaInfo for it?

Creating a video proxy file or reencoding it would likely solve your problem.
